Pre-SXSW Startup Crawl Guide

With over 83 companies participating in this year's Startup Crawl, we thought it would be nice to prep you with some essentials. Take a look at what startups will be where, features to expect at specific stops, and gain some context before you dive into their free drinks and food.

 

Below is a look at some interesting startups that are a part of this year's Startup Crawl, which is orchestrated by Capital Factory in partnership with Red Velvet Events:

Honest Dollar

Honest Dollar isn’t your typical financial services company. Truth be told, we’re actually more of a software company. One whose goal is to make investing fast, easy and frustration free.

Recent notable successes and what we're looking forward to for 2015:

We just launched at SXSW and are already in the process of closing a $3M seed round, led by Expansive Ventures. We'll have a sign-up for our beta product (Austin startups are welcome), which we’ll be releasing in a couple months.

Our startup is growing: We currently have 10 full-time employees and a small team of contractors. We'll be aggressively hiring this spring, particularly in the areas of UX, design and development.

Why we're different: We're the only startup in Austin with a Whurley (true). Working out of WeWork is pretty cool, too.

Chiron Health

With full regulatory and reimbusement support, Chiron Health is a secure platform for outpatient follow-up care.

We built out an inside sales team, piloting with Northwestern University, and built integration with athenahealth. We're looking forward to building out enterprise sales team and launching native iOS / Android apps this year. 

We're at 14 employees today and have a fierce pingpong competition on a daily basis! We're planning to hire another dozen this year. Expect live demos and Shiner Bock at Capital Factory!

NarrativeDX

Through its innovative analytics technology, NarrativeDX turns masses of patient narratives about care experiences into actionable knowledge in real time.

We've won a ton of awards: DreamIt Health ’14, Finalist for Impact Pediatric, Finalist for HX360 Innovation Challenge, Best in Show for Energizing Health Houston. We're expanding our partner network to 20 nation-leading institutions this year. Our startup is growing: we're hiring five this year and have a team of three.

SwitchUp

SwitchUp is an online platform that helps students find an educational program for their transition into a technology career.

 This past year we got some awesome press: we we're featured on Wired, Lifehacker, VentureBeat, FastCompany and many other national publications.

We're planning for two new hires this year, adding to our four-employee team. All our employees are remote and we're proud of providing amazing work-life balance (pictured: The two co-founders hiking in Bali while working remotely).

Togga

Togga is creating a fantasy sports platform that lets soccer fans connect, engage and enjoy fantasy games with their friends and the worldwide soccer community. They will be launching their new single player game, Perfect XI Challenge, at SXSW.

VChain Solutions

Gamified learning is a growing educational model of the future! 

Our courses are designed to assess and provide individuals and teams the hands-on, practical skills they need to perform in multiple supply chain roles including buyer, planner, and inventory control manager. 

In 2015, we're planning to extend to Mexico this year through a partnership deal.

Recent Success:  Launched technology Anderson High School, San Antonio Can Academy, Austin Can Academy.

Number of current employees: will expand our employees from 12 to 35 by the end of the year.

Pingboard

The Pingboard platform — a modern social company directory — helps your employees stay connected. 

Recent notable successes: We recently amassed over 7,000 users, and we also launched the ability to instantly setup a fully-populated company directory with Pingboard using Google Apps. We're looking forward to helping even more growing companies scale their culture! It's what drives us each and everyday.

How big are we? We have nine employees. We have no new hires yet in 2015, but we are actively looking for an awesome front-end designer/developer to join our team!

Details of what you can expect at the crawl: We will be featuring our new Pingboard TV App that can run on any TV. It will let a company showoff the faces and stories of the people who work there in a beautiful and fun way. We'll also be giving away a few Amazon Fire Sticks that can be used to run the new App to a few lucky people that stop by our table!

Pristine

Pristine supplies Google Glass with EyeSight and Checklists, two HIPAA compliant, handsfree, voice-controlled vido streaming and checklist solutions. 

Recent notable successes: We closed a $5.4 Million Series A last September.

Doubling down: we're at 19 employees. We've more than doubled in the past year, added eight employees last year, and have already added three employees this year.

What we're looking forward to for 2015: Explosive growth in the use of wearable technology in the enterprise space, and new features we are releasing.

What brightens our work week: Friday happy hours, lunch catered everyday from different Austin restaurants, and a downtown office with an awesome view of the Capitol.

ROIKOI

ROIKOI works to save companies time and resources by boosting employee referrals through a nifty platform.

We have 10 clients using our recruiting platform, and we're excited for a ton of hiring, sales, marketing, fundraising, and pursuing partnerships this year! And we're growing, adding eight this year to the current six full-time employees.

Grab some cool swag at our stop: we're giving out glowing helmets & sweet t-shirts!

When you don't see us walking, we're golf carting around.



Weeva

Weeva converts stories and memories to gorgeous coffee table books. 

Notable successes starting out: We have recently produced an 80th birthday book for Leonard Cohen (click here to see a preview).  We also have several fan led projects in process, including one that we are planning to launch at SXShot. We're ready for explosive growth.

We're going to grow by 5-10 employees this year. Right now, we're at three full-time and three part-time employees. 

What to check out at our stop: We will be showing off our beautiful, crowdsourced art-quality books.

Square Root

Square Root
 specializes in SaaS products that assist large retail networks and help them perform more efficiently and effectively. 

Recent notable successes: we were ranked No. 15 on Fortune's Best Small/Medium Companies to Work for in the U.S. We're looking forward to growing our team and our product in 2015! We're on the verge of something really great and it's exciting to be part of that energy.

Team count: We're hiring 8-10 folks for our product, customer success, sales, data science, engineering, and marketing teams. We currently have 39 employees.

Expect a circus: literally! Our event will turn our three houses into a three-ring circus.  We'll have a Bananarchy food truck, circus-themed cocktails, local beer, an aerialist 30 feet up in the center of our lawn, DJ Mr. Thrill, face painting, fortune telling, carnival games with prizes and some other surprises!

What makes our workday vibrant? Our people! We've got some awesome perks and pets, but our people make Square Root unique.

Real Massive

Real Massive is an accurate real-time commercial real estate platform.

Recent notable successes: Launching one to two markets per week. We now offer our services in 29 markets. We're looking forward to expanding our team and launching our product in over 70 new markets across the U.S. this year. 

We're at 27 team members currently, and we're looking to double in size by the end of 2015.

What to expect at our stop: food, drinks, RealMassive swag, DJ, karaoke, photo booth.

Why our jobs are wonderful: Best Places to Work in 2014, bi-monthy massages, weekly bootcamps, catered lunch every day, weekly happy hour, and the CEO's dog Nessa comes to work every day (she is also in our team photo).

Civitas Learning

Civitas Learning
 is a wicked smart, incredibly talented team of engineers, data scientists, product managers, and partnerships team members who are working with really cool cutting-edge technology to make an impact for higher education.

Recent notable successes: New partners and $16 million in new funding and new services.

We're ramped up for 2015: We are a mission-driven organization and we're excited about our work transforming higher education. We are capturing new insights around student success with our partner institutions, and we are excited to share new stories of our work with them this year. We've doubled our employee count each of the last two years and plan to again. We have 100 employees right now and plan to add another 50-60 by the end of the year.

Why their stop is going to rock: Amazing app demos, LinkedIn in the house running their Profile Makeover Station, food from The Peached Tortilla, DJ set, drinks, games, raffle/prizes and a chance to meet and mingle with the team.

Datafiniti

Datafiniti is an Austin-based startup that is revolutionizing the way web data is delivered to businesses. Using proprietary technologies, Datafiniti allows businesses to get the web data they want when they want it. With customers ranging from Fortune 500 to Startups, Datafiniti's services have helped these companies achieve their business goals.

Located in Downtown Austin with 13 employees, Datafiniti has ambitious growth plans for this year. Our team consists of techies, geeks, gamers, sports enthusiasts, philosophers, foodies, movie maniacs, world travellers, flower lovers, gym rats and passionate debaters. In short, our interesting people make the most innovative technologies.  

A Nespresso coffee machine keeps an already excited crowd more gregarious. Combine that with Foodie Fridays, flexible work hours and paid parking, working at Datafiniti and in downtown Austin is a daily joy.

 

JamFeed

A lot of musicians are making some great music today. JamFeed is an app that helps users follow along with any news related to their favorite artists. 

Recent notable successes:  Android just launched on March 3 making us live on both iOS and Android now! We're at four full-time employees and four interns, looking to hire 2-3 people in Q3 and Q4 of this year. What we're looking forward to for 2015:  creating our artists management platform and helping artists engage with fans and make money doing it.

RoverPass

RoverPass has learned quite a bit in its few months of operation. The company is now laser focused on the RV market with an exciting subscription model for unlimited camping with hopes to spark new market demand. We're also looking forward to introducing our service to the RV industry during the 2015 summer camping season.

Everyday snapshot: We're currently at nine employees What brightens our workday? Our office dog, Stella. She’s a big fluffy six-month-old puppy that loves people.

 

Umbel

Umbel is a Customer Data Platform that empowers companies to convert massive amounts of customer data into addressable, actionable and authentic customer relationships. Listed as one of Austin's A-List Hottest Startups by the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce in 2014, Umbel continues on an upward trajectory with their recent Oracle partnership and expansion of their leadership team.

Currently, Umbel has 50 employees and has plans to expand by at least 30 more employees in 2015. Don't be surprised if you find the El Umbel Luchador mascot walking around their office, in addition to unlimited snacks, streaming music, and a first-rate French press coffee machine. Stop by their booth for a demo of the Umbel product and some sweet Umbel swag!
