What Millennials want out of the workplace — and why it matters

It appears Millennials don’t really think that highly of the corporate world. In fact, if you believe the results of a large study from the consulting giant Deloitte, they downright don’t like corporate culture at all. For companies looking to hire the next top talent, that matters.

These young people grew up with computers in their cribs, and if American companies want to capture that talent they may be forced to make some pretty big cultural changes.

To begin with, a whopping 75 percent of Millennials believe corporations are more focused on their own agendas than on improving society – no surprises there. But what’s amazing is Millennials are backing up their beliefs with action. About 60 percent of them chose employers based on business purpose. The percentage went as high as 77 percent if the Millennial was a heavy social media user. If this trend holds up, it could bring in a world where the most successful firms are socially conscious, as they’re the ones who are able to pull in the best talent.

As far as the industries Millennials wanted to work in, technology, media and telecommunications were the most attractive. Again, probably no surprise, but Google and Apple were seen as the best corporate leaders — Comcast and Time Warner were not.

Leadership roles were sought more by Millennial men than women, and women self-reported having worse leadership skills than men self-reported. Tellingly, however, when asked what they’d do if put in a leadership role, women said they’d emphasize employee growth and development; two qualities Millennials thought were missing from current organizations.

This study paints a picture of a generation that holds businesses to a new, higher standard, and shows a deep respect for where business culture could go. If the survey is correct, tomorrow’s top businesses could look a lot different than today’s — and we may be better for it.
