For those of us working in Austin, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it's a pretty great place to be in business.

A new survey out from MarketWatch, the financial information website, proves what we already knew — Austin is among the best cities in the United States for business. Austin took the number 12th spot, just ahead of Minneapolis, and several slots above San Antonio.

The survey ranked the 101 largest cities in the United States by business climate, company performance and economic outcome. To get the rankings the study looked at 10 metrics on cities with populations above 500,000. The metrics included things like the number of companies per capita in a metropolitan area, GDP, growth, etc.

Austin scored 493 out of 800 for business climate, 394 out of 800 for company performance and 652 out of 750 for economic outcome. Our overall score was 1,539, 148 points behind the national leader, Dallas.

Cities in Texas performed well across the board. Besides Dallas taking the top spot, Houston took number 7, and San Antonio number 15. Way farther down on the list, El Paso took 60 and McAllen 93.

Looking at the top ten, only Raleigh is located on the East Coast. In fact, Raleigh is the only city east of the Mississippi to break the top 10. Two cities in the Bay Area made the top ten.

Here are the top 12:

  1. Dallas - 1,687
  2. San Francisco - 1,665
  3. Seattle - 1,651
  4. De Moines - 1,641
  5. Raleigh - 1,626
  6. San Jose - 1,599
  7. Houston - 1,596
  8. Provo - 1,569
  9. Oklahoma City - 1,564
  10. Denver – 1,563
  11. Boston – 1,542
  12. Austin – 1,539
