How an Austin office is taking Hollywood into the digital age

You may not realize it, but some of the magic of Hollywood is happening right here in Austin. It may not be the sort of magic you’re thinking of, but one company is using their Austin offices to bring Hollywood into the digital age.

OnPrem, a Los Angeles-based consultancy, opened their Innovation and Development Center in Austin in June of 2014. They've been growing rapidly ever since — in a short 2 years the consultancy has grown to 90 full time employees, about 20 of which are here in Austin.

“The biggest challenge for us is to continue to find the right talent," Christophe Ponsart, Founding Partner at OnPrem said. “It’s honestly been a breath of fresh air moving out to Austin, and building out what we’re building. The talent we’ve been able to find is some of the best I’ve had the pleasure to work with in my entire career. It just really reaffirms the fact that Austin has great talent that is ready and available.”

OnPrem offers a slew of services, many of which are aimed at bringing media companies into the digital age.

It might sound silly thinking about Hollywood needing a technological upgrade. Especially when you think about the high-tech special effects you see in films. But think of it like this: There are often separate versions of films for all the different places you can watch a movie. And recently, there has been an explosion in the number of places you watch a movie. Just think about it — movie theaters, Netflix, television, cruise ships, airplanes, China... The list keeps going, and a different format of the film is needed for each one. OnPrem's consultants design, develop and put in place technologies that automate that supply chain.

Of course that's just one example of the sort of work OnPrem does, but you get the idea.

Having grown so fast already, OnPrem has no plans on slowing down.

“We’re building out our East Coast practice,” said Jon Christian, Founding Partner at OnPrem. “We have a consulting team out in LA, but we have a consulting pod in New York. We’re looking to get dramatic growth through our East Coast office and penetrate into the broadcasting space there.”

In addition to expanding East, the company plans on doubling their Austin team to keep up with demand.

"We want to form a foundation and a base of our software development practice out here, Ponsart said. "We have a lot more growth expected down here in Austin."
