Beat the heat at these startup-heavy watering holes

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s not like you didn’t know it already. It’s hot outside and it’s going to stay hot outside. The weather gurus are calling for it to be above 100 every day for the foreseeable future. So, where do people in the tech and startup world go to socialize when it’s just too damned hot to step foot outside? Below are 5 drinking spots that are well known hangouts for the startup crowd. Go, drink and be merry — and cool.

The Backspace - 507 San Jacinto St

Ok, so it’s a little hard to find The Backspace the first time you come, but that just adds to its charm. The atmosphere is incredibly inviting, and so long as you’re driving home in airconditioning, spending an afternoon gorging on pizza and beer is a perfect escape from the heat. This place does get busy, so grab yourself some reservations before heading over.

Swift’s Attic - 315 Congress Ave

This is the sort of place that you go to grab a quick appetizer and a drink after work, only to look up and realize you’ve been sitting, drinking and chatting for the six hours. The food is good, but more of an excuse to meet up than a main attraction, and the drink list is filled with surprisingly refreshing options. Be aware, however, this place has some weird hours and if you’re planning on cutting out of work for a jump-start on the night, they’re closed from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

CU29 - 720 Brazos St

To say this place makes creative cocktails would be an understatement. Their cocktails change often, but it’s not unheard of to be on the receiving end of a Peanut Butter Delight Cocktail or even a Girl Scout Samoa Martini. Sure, the realization that you just drank an alcoholic milkshake might make you second guess your decision making abilities in the morning, but damn if they’re not refreshing going down.

The Ginger Man - 301 Lavaca St

Looking for a good old-fashioned bar to relax and grab a drink with work friends? Look no further. This place has all the standard amenities — some dart boards, a good selection of ice-cold beer, and a super-relaxed vibe. Probably most importantly, the place is super dark and cold — it’s like crawling into a cave filled with beer.

Peche - 208 W 4th St

Featuring interesting cocktails like fig Manhattans and appetizers like mushroom fritters, it’s no wonder this place is popular. But not only is the food and drink worth the trip, the ambiance is second to none, and so is the A/C. Oh, and they have absinthe, so you can channel your inner French impressionist painter — or just make bad decisions and blame it on the green fairy. Stupid fairy.
