Music snobs now have the power to control in-store music playlists

For those of us who enter a retail store and cannot resist complaining about the music, Mood Media has launched a feature to help you have a say in what gets played next.

Turning your phone into a virtual sound system remote, Social Mix allows customers to see the live playlist when they’re at a restaurant, bar, grocery store, etc, then promote the song they’d like to hear next. The most popular song, as voted by the current clientele, moves to the top of the playlist, with no repeats.

“We've watched this evolution and recognize that within reason, giving a customer or employee an option to have a say just makes sense from an engagement and activation perspective,” said a Mood Media representative.

The developers created Social Mix as an add on to its existing Mood Mix Pro solution, which allows businesses to build out playlists from a comprehensive music library covering genre, energy, mood, and style, with no interruptions that stream within their locations.

Microbrew pub Growler USA rolled it out this month at their 29th street location. Growler’s assistant general manager, Louis Mejia, described customers as being a bit surprised when they first realized they had the ability to influence the music and playlist around them. Since then, however, Mejia said he's seen people from surrounding tables collaborate in an effort to get a specific song to the top.

“It’s easy to use, and our customers love the Social Mix feature. They get to participate in the music experience and channel their inner DJ,” said Corey Matthews, assistant general manager of Growler USA.

If you’re at an establishment and want to know if Social Mix is available, look for in-store signage and table tents encouraging clients to visit www.socialmix.fm. You can also use the Social Mix map on the website to see which places in the area have it.

Mood Media, located off West 5th St., has over 500,000 subscriber locations internationally and over 150 million customers. The Austin company uses sound, sight, scent, social and system solutions to ignite an emotional bond between businesses and consumers. The company will continue maintenance of the music library to ensure fresh content as well as develop enhancements based on feedback from their clients and customers.
