Data Scientist
You might think data scientists build magical mathematical models that predict the future and while that might be partially true, at Civitas Learning the work our Data Scientists are doing is what makes our products so cutting-edge. Data Scientists find ways to streamline and automate processes, discover and investigate data problems, and coordinate with other teams on deployments and product features.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it
We are looking for extraordinary Data Scientists to join our team where you’ll have the opportunity to investigate challenging problems, work with complex data sets, solve puzzles every day, and work towards a goal of improving our predictive analytics applications designed to help colleges and universities help their students succeed.
Your Objectives
Work collaboratively with software and data engineers, and the product team to develop powerful predictive models that fuel our applications, and to deploy those to our partner institutions.
Manipulate and transform raw tables from which you can extract insightful features for how we can deliver insights and actionable recommendations to users at the frontline of education.
Work with ETL/data warehousing concepts as well as data science algorithms in signal processing, feature engineering and model building with quality assurance using visual analytics.
Report data findings diligently and creatively to internal teams and externally to our partners.
Apply an understanding of traditional business intelligence and data warehousing concepts (ETL, data modeling, and reporting).
Your Tools
BS/MS/PhD in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or comparable experience
Comfort manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume, highly dimensional data from varying sources combined with a passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data and models.
Strong working knowledge and demonstrated expertise with statistical concepts such as correlation, linear regression, optimization, and how they can be applied.
Experience with distributed computing, such as Spark or Hadoop
Proficiency in at least one statistical analysis tool/framework (R, NumPy/SciPy/Pandas/SciKit learn), SparkML, and ability to learn languages and tools rapidly.
Working knowledge of time-series event processing with tools such as Apache Kafka and NiFi
Programming languages and tools to design efficient algorithms, such as Python, Scala, Java, SQL for data manipulation and statistical analysis.
Working knowledge of Bayesian inference (Monte Carlo Markov Chain)
What you are looking for in your career
An office full of insanely talented, mission-driven people.
The chance to use your powers to do something that truly matters.
Being involved with a once-in-a-generation company, at the cutting edge of technology.
If you have an acute sense for what it takes to think strategically AND get into the details, you are highly analytical and are able to get at the root of every problem in order to solve it, and if you see yourself in the shoes of college and universities faced with the unique challenge and opportunity of designing better pathways to student success, then you belong here.
