Director, Corporate Strategy and Development
 
Opportunity and basic background:
 
Homeaway is the global leader in vacation rentals, the second largest travel accommodation option, behind only traditional hotels and resorts, and the fastest growing segment within the travel accommodations industry. In the coming years, HomeAway aspires to hyper-charge VR growth by taking this category mainstream.
 
HomeAway is looking for a Director of Corporate Strategy and Development to help it chart and navigate a clear course for industry leadership. This course will be grounded in differentiated competitive advantages and a strong customer value proposition for travelers and owners. In addition, as HomeAway has historically used strategic investments to help it grow its marketplace. As such, this journey is likely to include work on opportunistic acquisitions and investments.
 
HomeAway is actively seeking exceptional candidates who (1) are highly motivated to succeed, (2) have a track record of academic and professional success (3) desire to take a category from relative obscurity to mainstream and (4) exhibit real enthusiasm and passion for the vacation rental industry.
 
Primary responsibilities:
 
This Director report will report directly to the head of Strategy and Development and will be expected to:
 
· Collaborate with HomeAway’s executive and senior management teams to develop HomeAway’s strategic and investment priorities.

· Derive insights from internal and external data that enable corporate, regional and business unit leadership to make critical business and investment decisions.

· Work effectively across all business and support functions at HomeAway (i.e., Executive management, Corporate strategy, Corporate business intelligence, Sales, Marketing, Finance, Product and technology, eCommerce, etc.).

This Director should expect to work on a variety of projects. Below are a few examples of projects and the estimated % of time that each requires:
 
· (25%) Annual “3 year plan” process – Conduct an annual “strategy process” alongside FP&A, the business and product/development, which helps inform HomeAway’s 3 year strategic vision. Efforts culminate in a global executive offsite where the company’s strategic direction and annual performance targets are discussed and set by the top ~60 leaders at HomeAway.

· (10%) Quarterly business review process – Organize and run all quarterly meetings, including the board meeting, business unit performance reviews and a global leadership meeting, etc.

· (5%) Weekly President/COO and CTeam (CEO, COO, etc.) meetings – Work directly with the President/COO to organize and run a weekly staff meeting and a weekly CTeam meeting.

· (20%) Mergers and acquisitions – Work as necessary on due diligence process management, financial modeling and other quantitative and qualitative due diligence. In the event of a successful deal close, work with necessary HomeAway leadership to ensure PMI success.

· (40%) One-off strategic projects as decided by yourself and the CTeam

o Geographic expansion planning and implementation

o Worldwide, regional and local pricing strategy

o Search engine marketing strategy and execution

o New product brainstorming

o Competitive analysis

o Etc.
 
Profile/Skills:
 
· A strong record of academic excellence

o An MBA from a top program strongly preferred.

· A strong record of professional performance

o At least 5 years of relevant, strategic work experience, as evidenced by being at the Manager level at a top tier consulting firm

o Experience in travel and/or vacation rentals and/or the web a strong plus

· Repeated experience coordinating and conducting the “strategy process,” including:

o Leading teams of 1-5+ people in the framing of complex business problems

o Understanding the “big picture" quickly, identifying key issues, and prioritizing analysis

o Driving subsequent analysis to arrive at a well-structured answer

· Repeated experience coordinating and conducting the “due diligence process”, including:

o Leading teams of 1-5+ people in analyzing target company information

o Preparing detailed due diligence reports

· Experience managing people in a collaborative, cross-functional project setting with or without direct reporting relationships.

· Exceptional analytic horsepower to drive data analysis with or without the aid of additional resources.

· The ability to communicate complex business problems and insights to a wide audience.

· A senior management perspective with solid interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

· A high tolerance for ambiguity and the ability to drive to action despite incomplete information.

· A desire to research the travel and vacation rental industries and form on-going industry relationships.

· A true passion for the travel and vacation rental industries.
