Do you want to be a technical Product Manager at a fast-growing mid-size company in the IT Security market?  As a PM, you will drive the product roadmap, conduct market research, listen to existing customers, and prospects.
The product manager is the nexus of everything in the company related to product.  It's a leadership role that is respected across the company.  It requires a blend of technical knowledge, business acumen, and people skills.  

If you are already a Product Manager, you know how the job is usually done, but you should consider product management at AlienVault because it's very different than most companies that sell technology products to other businesses.

ENGINEERING RELATIONSHIP

  • AlienVault: Harmonious, mutual trust, everyone focused on business
  • Typical Enterprise Software Company: Contentious, distrustful, engineering focused on building "cool" technology

SALES

  • AlienVault: Inside reps sell "what's on the truck", not futures
  • Typical Enterprise Software Company: Outside sales reps sell futures, and PM is forced to alter the roadmap to fulfill bad promises

MARKETING

  • AlienVault: PM works in close partnership with PMMs to help devise strategies for driving demand across our core channels, including social media, organic search traffic, paid search, and affiliate sites.
  • Typical Enterprise Software Company: Demand is generated by outsides sales and C-level executive relationships. Marketing is buzzword-compliant, does not talk to the users about their pain points, and PM has very little input into marketing themes and campaigns. Everyone spends their days in functional silos.

PRODUCT STRATEGY:

  • AlienVault: PM listens to end users and builds products that solve their needs TODAY. End users love the products so much they tell their friends.
  • Typical Enterprise Software Company: PM is forced to build products for a top-down sales model. This means the CIO is the first priority and end users are often an afterthought; much of the software ends up as shelfware or is still being deployed months or even years later.

ABILITY TO IMPACT THE BUSINESS

  • AlienVault: High velocity sales and product delivery model means PM can have a tangible impact on the bottom line every day.
  • Typical Enterprise Software Company: Long sales cycles and even longer release cycles means PMs are always waiting to see the fruits of their labor.

TRAVEL

  • AlienVault: AlienVault has too many customers to visit each one. To reach all the end users, PM uses a combination of phone interviews, web meetings, surveys, and community interactions to guide product direction.
  • Typical Enterprise Software Company: Up to 75%. Outside sales model requires PM to continuously hit the road for deal support and to support conferences that CIOs and high-level decisions makers might be attending. PM must cater to a small number of "high visibility" accounts that make up the majority of the revenue.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

  • Drive the product roadmap, conduct market research, listen to existing customers, and prospects.
  • Working with user experience to create visual designs based on your requirements, vetting those with customers and internal stakeholders before engineering implements
  • Work with Product Marketing on your product messaging and go to market plan and strategy
  • Gathering, defining as well as prioritizing requirements based on user and market research. This is typically done by surveys, market analysis, competitive analysis and talking with prospects and customers.
  • Working closely with engineering, answering questions and providing guidance on defined requirements

WHAT YOU NEED: 

  • Bachelor's Degree 
  • Experience with requirements gathering & prioritization, preferably as a software product
    manager
  • Strong technical background; security background a big plus
  • Track record of shipping successful products or delivering successful projects in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills, and ability to interact with customers, partners, and press/analysts with accuracy and professionalism
  • Ability to think and execute at both strategic and operational levels.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and self-discipline to work effectively in a high-paced environment.
