HomeAway is seeking aVAT Manager, based in Austin, to be involved in the aspects of the Company’s worldwide VAT planning and compliance. This VAT manager will work in a dynamic tax environment and will focus on indirect tax matters (VAT, GST, etc.). 

This position requires working closely with other members of the indirect tax department and throughout the HomeAway organization in order to ensure coordination on the VAT filling, reporting and compliance, obtain input from VAT subject matter experts and ensure cross/functional VAT solutions. Responsibilities:

  • Work in a dynamic tax environment with focus on global indirect tax matters (VAT, GST, etc.) such as new business initiatives, legislative analysis,implementation of tax technology and general technical indirect tax questions
  • EMEA VAT calculation and filing
  • Establish processes to ensure the timely and accurate filing of VAT returns
  • Review VAT accounts and VAT aging for issues and provide support to resolve accordingly
  • Assistance on reviewing the VAT compliance and oversee preparation for the EMEA region across all HomeAway brands
  • Assistance with drafting indirect tax policies and procedures as needed
  • Support HomeAway in applying appropriate VAT to complex customer facing and supplier matters
  • Coordinating and responding to indirect tax audit requests
  • Mentor VAT assistant in developing further expertise in VAT technical matters and project
  • Monitor changes in VAT legislation to ensure compliance
  • Performing self-audits of operational guidance and indirect tax controls
  • Strong focus on improving controls and processes, including implementation of technology solutions
  • Tracking and communicating internally changes in indirect tax laws and regulations
  • Teaming with International Direct Tax, Transfer Pricing and US Indirect tax team

Qualifications:The ideal candidate will have experience in effectively managing indirect tax projects, identifying appropriate resources required and delivering within agreed deadlines. The ability to work perform and review research, work effectively with outside advisors and with internal business units is expected.Professional demeanor and excellent communication skills are required as is the ability to work independently, presentations and to problem solve effectively.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience including public accounting or law firm experience. Industry experience in the technology sector is preferred
  • At least Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Tax related discipline
  • Ability to quickly understand and integrate business objectives, and effectively communicate VAT requirements to management
  • Detailed knowledge of VAT rules in Europe including VAT invoice requirements,reverse-charge mechanism
  • Self-motivated, independent thinker and problem solver
  • Proficient in Excel, including with pivot tables and modeling
  • Must have detailed knowledge of VAT rules in Europe including VAT invoice requirements, reverse charge mechanism, and place of supply rules required
  • Must be extremely well-organized, and able to adapt to changing and/or pressured circumstances with grace and agility
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Attention to detail while maintaining the ability to see the big picture
  • Must be able to work independently and exercise sound judgment, even within complete data
  • Must be a team player, and be able to build strong working relationships with a diverse range of co-workers, vendors, and other project participants
  • Must be able to delegate effectively both up, down and across the chain of command, and mentor others to help bring out their best
  • Must have the flexibility that a global company requires (e.g. be available for calls with people in other time zones, etc.)
  • Proficient in Excel, including pivot tables and modeling
  • Strong organizational, project management, interpersonal, and communication skills
