How this Austin hackathon plans to change health care
Health care is in a state of flux.

Aside from keeping up with current legislation, there are plenty of new services looking to reinvent and simplify the way Americans purchase and use health care. One of Austin's largest companies, athenahealth, is hosting a hackathon this weekend to make sure innovation never stops. As part of their More Disruption Please (MDP) program, the event aims to bring together innovative-thinkers to produce solutions that will disrupt the status quo.

The company will provide access to athenahealth's APIs to enable participants the tools they need to start changing and innovating health care.
“Health care presents a huge opportunity for those interested in creating change through technology, and we need insight from experts in all different industries,” Associate Director Lindsey Kempton said. “So if you are an engineer, entrepreneur, physician, designer, scientist, patient or just interested in using your skills to drive a change in health care, then we want you!”

The goal of the MDP program is to foster innovation in health care and reduce the barrier to entries for companies in the health care space. The program has helped bolster health care innovation through their accelerator program and through their evolving open API.

“Continuing to build out our API to allow for deeper integrations with partners is at the top of our list,” Kempton said. “Each time we integrate with a new MDP partner, we learn a little more or uncover a new part of our applications that would benefit from being exposed via API. We’re constantly adding to our API roadmap based on these experiences.”

The company is based in Massachusetts, but maintains a large and growing Austin office.

“We recently opened our Austin office and have been blown away by the great reception from the Austin community,” Kempton said. “The health tech space is really growing in Austin and has a lot of potential for the future of health care, so we’re excited to engage with the community and be a part of that.”
