New app offers golfers on-demand ordering on the links

The origin of golf dates back to the 15th century on the eastern coast of Scotland, when players hit a pebble using a stick or primitive club through a natural course of sand dunes and rabbit trails.

Aside from flashy sponsorships, 18-hole courses, the addition of women golfers, and golf carts, the game itself hasn’t really changed from six centuries ago.

Local developer Harrison Montgomery hopes to modernize one of the world’s oldest sports with a new app currently in testing that expedites and eases the ability to get supplies while on the course.

Montgomery's GPS-enabled app, Glink, will allow golfers to order on-demand goods, food and refreshments from anywhere on the course — not just at the turn — and provide the course stores and concessions with a digital inventory system.

The SMU grad and golfer said he came up with the idea in 2014 when he golfed on a Dallas course during a hot Texas afternoon. Needing water and calories, he thought there had to be an easier way to refuel rather than making the 10-minute hike to the clubhouse.

“If you’re on the 13th hole and really need something, there’s an opportunity out there for a course to increase their revenue and a golfer to increase their course experience,” said Montgomery.

Montgomery and his team hope to launch the app on the Android and Apple markets before the end of the traditional golf season, Oct. 31, and are in talks with several local courses to partner with. The team is also seeking their first round of funding.
