5 Austin startups to help you stick to your New Year's resolution

New year, new you, right? The art of the New Year’s resolution dates back to more than 4,000 years ago when people would pledge their oaths and reaffirm loyalty to ancient kings and gods. Since then, resolutions have become a little more personal: leading a healthier lifestyle, surrounding yourself with positivity and so on. But keeping these goals for an entire year can be a challenge, so here are several Austin startups to help you stay committed.

Write the book you’ve wanted to

So you’ve decided 2017 is the year you will finally write that book you’ve had in mind for years. Make that dream a reality with the help of Book in a Box, a startup that launched in 2014 by founder and notorious author Tucker Max. Instead of having to do everything yourself, you'll have the support of the Book in a Box publishers, editors, book developers and marketers to guide you through the process. All you have to commit to is a series of interviews and conversations conducted between you and the Book in a Box editors. Be prepared to spend some mula, though, because this is not an inexpensive service.

Volunteer more

For those of us wanting to donate more time giving back to the community this year, check out Austin startup GivePulse. Launched in 2012, GivePulse has helped more than 10,000 volunteer groups create social change, recording over one million volunteer hours across the country. Using the service is easy: just type in your local zip code and unlock volunteer opportunities nearby. Volunteer coordinators can also use GivePulse’s management software to organize, report and survey for upcoming events.

Eat healthier

We love our Texas food staples like savory barbecue, queso-covered Mexican, juicy burgers and more. As delicious as they are, these foods should not enjoy daily residency on your dinner plate. Eat healthier in 2017 using Austin-based food startup Snap Kitchen. With Snap Kitchen’s pre-crafted meals and an extensive menu of offerings, you can plan your meals for the week in advance by ordering over their app for in-store pickup at one of seven locations (or use Favor, GrubHub or UberEats for delivery).

Stay fit

Probably one of the most common New Year’s resolutions is a commitment to routine exercise. And Austin, a city thrives on fitness, has been the home-base for several startups focused on making it as easy as possible for people schedule regular workouts. One of those companies is Your Trainer, which uploads over 3,000 exercises and offers a virtual trainer so you can workout anywhere and anytime.
