Medici leads this week’s fundings with $22M

Three Austin startups raised fundings this week, led by healthtech startup Medici with a $22 million Series A. The company develops mobile communications tools so patients can meet with their doctors virtually in place of scheduling in-office appointments. William Hurley’s quantum computing startup Strangeworks also raised $4 million this week to bring supercomputing speeds to enterprises. Eventador rounded out a strong week of funding for Austin tech, with a $2.5 million seed round for its data streaming platform. [Built In Austin]

Crypto loan startup Unchained Capital raises $3M seed round

Austin crypto startup Unchained Capital raised nearly $3 million in funding last week to use for hiring across its engineering and marketing teams. The fintech company offers cash loans in exchange for crypto collateral. Unchained Capital previously only accepted Bitcoin as collateral but announced in conjunction with the funding news that they now accept Ethereum. Investors Michael Komaransky, formerly of Cumberland Mining; Brian Spaly, angel investor and co-founder of Bonobos and Trunk Club; Mike Erwin and William Hurley of Ecliptic Capital; and Ezra Galston of Starting Line all participated in the round. Civitas Learning acquires Indianapolis edtech company

Austin-based Civitas Learning announced on Tuesday that is has acquired a two-year-old edtech startup from Indianapolis called ClearScholar. The acquisition comes several months after Civitas Learning integrated ClearScholar’s services directly into its platform. The move lets Civitas offer higher ed students mobile experiences that recommend resources and activities based on student interest and needs. Details of the acquisition were not released. Accruent deploys huge hiring plans in New Orleans, acquires another company

Accruent made the news twice this past week for yet another acquisition and for opening a new operations office. Following a year of ongoing strategic acquisitions, Accruent most recently added Maintenance Connection, a maintenance management platform, to its suite of products. Accruent also announced the opening of a new office in New Orleans. The company will immediately hire 65 individuals, with plans to hire up to 350 by 2020. [Press Release]

BuildGroup locks in $330M fund to invest in software companies

On Tuesday, Austin-based venture firm BuildGroup announced it has raised $330 million to invest in software companies that show promise of longevity. The firm, founded in 2015, consists of former Rackspace executives including Lanham Napier, Jim Curry and Klee Kleber, as well as Pete Freeland from General Catalyst. The founders reportedly contributed a large portion of the overall funds in this round. BuildGroup said it will use June’s funds to invest in about 10 software companies spread across five years. The University of Texas gifted $2M from CA-based tech company for blockchain research

Ripple Labs, the San Francisco tech company behind the enterprise blockchain payment platform RippleNet, has dished out $2 million to the University of Texas to fund blockchain research. UT was one of 17 universities selected to receive a portion of a total of $50 million donated. In addition to the funding, Ripple will also offer technical resources to UT. [Austin Business Journal]
