Leading by Example: A CEO that truly cares

A little bit about Bruce Ge, CEO of Jobs2Careers.com

In business, a CEO’s job is to make money—to act in the best interest of shareholders while ensuring the company offers great products and services to its customers. Tasked daily with juggling the wants and needs of each department, catalyzing business development, considering a wide array of investor opportunities, in and out of meetings all day, reviewing the financials of the company and, at the same time, reading and responding to countless emails.

In the tech industry today, it is not uncommon to see incentives in the office: ping pong tables, hover boards, robotics, toys, Google Glasses, catered lunches every day (twice in our case), and so on. How do you separate your company from the rest? Bruce Ge, the founder and CEO of Jobs2Careers, works day in and day out to accomplish all of the above —and much more. Bruce believes in a true open door policy, not the kind where you must schedule a month in advance with an assistant and hope that nothing comes up between now and then. Gently knock on his office door, he will respond with an intriguing, “Yes!?” and greet you with a smile.

This style of leadership creates collaboration, on the job training (from the man himself) that instills trust and respect in all his employees. You will frequently see Bruce out on the floor conducting on the spot training with his engineers, as he is an engineer by trade, making sure operations are running smoothly, and finding resolution to any problems or bugs that may arise. Every other Wednesday Bruce is in our training room, leading Management Training to any employee who wishes to participate in the two-hour sessions. “Building and growing within an organization is just as important as recruiting key talent outside of the company,” says Bruce.

Get this—every morning between the hours of 9 and 10 a.m. Bruce is on our back patio catching up with two different employees one-on-one for 30 minutes, learning about who they are as individuals. No specific agenda of what to talk about, it could be your personal life, issues in the work place, how to make the company better, etc. Can you name another who does that?

He called me into his office and said, “I would like you to figure out how many employees do not have any plans for Christmas and let me know.” Already in action mode, I responded, “You got it!” Amidst all the pandemonium, being pulled in 20 different directions, he has the humanity and selflessness to ensure all employees have something to look forward to over the holiday break. With only a handful of personnel without plans, he wants to treat them to a Christmas Eve outing at the Perplexium in Austin followed by dinner and a gift exchange. How can one do all this with such a chaotic schedule? The bottom line is that Bruce truly cares about each and every one of his employees. This kind of mentality has allowed him to build this company from the ground into a huge industry contender.

How do I know these things? I am his executive assistant. Not only am I honored to work for this company, but I also have the privilege of being Bruce’s right-hand man. This company is what it is because he sincerely cares about the success of every person working here. I get to see it up close every day (and learn all that he has to teach).

We should all be so lucky.
