Rooster Teeth Animation is looking for an Art Director to work with the Director and creative team to inspire and lead the visual direction of 2D productions. From the humble beginnings of “Red vs Blue” (the internet’s longest running online show), the animation department has evolved into an essential part of RT culture - delving into 2D animation with the original series “Camp Camp” and our podcast-inspired series “RTAA”. We believe passionately in attracting the best and brightest for our team, creating the most engaging and impressive animated productions online or elsewhere (while also having more than a little fun in the process). A strong candidate will have a proven track record of creative leadership, interpersonal skills, and production experience to help the company fulfill its objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the quality of art and design across assigned shows, directing other contributors and leading by example
  • Work closely with the show’s Director to create the overall aesthetic of a production as well as the details of the show’s assets
  • Work closely with the internal creative production teams to help guide the logistics of the Pre-Production department
  • Establish guidelines with the Director to maintain art style and quality throughout projects, creating style guides for productions and updating them as needed
  • Generate, as well as guide members of your team in the generation of, initial concepts for characters, environments, and other production assets
  • Oversee the delivery of tasks and approvals for multiple art disciplines (Concept/Turnaround/Background/Modeling), providing detailed feedback to the multiple parties (including contract artists) as contextualized within the frame of each production’s “big picture”
  • Be current on industry trends and technologies to provide insight into current workflows
  • Review, provide artistic direction, mentor, and give constructive feedback to other artists in order to improve both their aesthetic and technical performance
  • Work closely with producers and other teams in the production pipeline to ensure a collaborative, efficient logistical approach to creating artwork
  • Provide direct education as well as help plan additional external educational resources, to ensure long term growth and improvement on the team
  • Work closely with the art team to ensure that all art supports and enhances the fiction and narrative of productions
  • Help guide in the creation of promotional art and marketing materials as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be willing to relocate to Austin, TX
  • Bachelor's degree from a four year college or university in Art, Illustration
  • Expert experience in Toon Boom - specifically rigging/puppetry
  • 2+ years of production experience as an Art Director
  • 5+ years of production experience in a creative leadership role
  • Experience managing a team of artists
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment with multidisciplinary teams
  • Highly proficient in fine art, 2D illustration, and animation fundamentals; able to guide, if not produce, art for characters, vehicles, and environments
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Expert level skills in Adobe CS, specifically Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Experience working in an animation pipeline

  • Proficient in Toon Boom Harmony
  • Graphic Design or related field preferred
  • The ideal candidate will have outstanding skills in multiple 2D art disciplines
