Managing Editor, Atmosphere News

Atmosphere is seeking a dynamic news leader to help lead the ongoing creation and management of an audio-optional news channel.

The Managing Editor will lead the production and programming of Atmosphere News, reporting to the Vice President of News.

Must be organized and efficient at managing your own time and the time of others under deadline pressure. Must be a manager who cares about and respects their team, and works to find a healthy balance between the stresses of careers in news production and the physical and mental demands of personal lives.

This role will preferably be based in our Austin, Texas, newsroom.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Lead production and programming of Atmosphere News
  • Manage show production teams, approving scripts, banners and rundowns
  • Create and enforce standards and practices that ensure fair and accurate news reporting
  • Work closely with partners to source content across a wide range of categories
  • Lead and help develop editorial staff members for growth, positioning them for new opportunities as the network evolves
  • Manage schedules for news team members
  • Set the programming strategy to capture and retain viewers
  • Oversee maintenance of a program guide
  • Oversee special programming related to significant news events
  • Create cooperative partnerships with departments across Atmosphere that support audience growth and brand consistency
  • Work with marketing to update news programming and consumer-facing marketing elements
  • Work with technical teams to develop consistent updates to systems and workflows to ensure quality control standards are met and surpassed
  • Oversee unit hiring needs and onboarding plans for all new hires to ensure new employee training and growth potential is maximized
  • Perform other duties as needed

PREFERENCES:

  • 6+ years of increasing editorial responsibility and people management experience
  • BS/BA in journalism, communication or related field
  • Proactive work ethic 
  • Ability to bring new ideas to the table
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multitask
  • Efficiency with Google Sheets and Docs
  • Ability to work and thrive in a fast paced startup environment (can move between 30,000 feet to 3 feet with ease)
  • Natural ability to connect and build strong relationships with others, demonstrating strong emotional intelligence and an ability to communicate clearly
  • Proven leadership, personal integrity and charisma to build consensus with colleagues
  • Proven ability to have hard conversations with tact and care
