Principal Data Scientist
We are looking for an experienced data scientist responsible for delivering data-driven and actionable insights about our customers / strategic initiatives to help optimize our businesses.
This role will work across a variety of behavioral data sets, leveraging customer and transaction data to boost the performance of marketing and grocery delivery initiatives. S/he will build statistical and machine models to improve customer segmentation, targeting, and promotion programs.
To be successful in this capacity, a combination of leadership, technical, and communication skills will be required. S/he will build relationships with leaders across analytics, technology, and marketing teams and play a pivotal role in advising stakeholders on the most suitable analytical approaches that best address current business questions. We are looking for an accomplished professional who can create deliverables that meet the needs of business users with varying levels of technical knowledge.
Above and beyond strong data and technical skills, the right candidate for this position will have a strong understanding of business and marketing performance. The position is located in Austin, TX.
Responsibilities
The following duties are essential in successful execution of the position:
- Build, maintain, evolve and productionize machine learning frameworks to quantify the impact of marketing activities on Whole Foods Market from an omni-channel perspective.
- Establish data pipelines not limited to creating custom database tables and designing efficient data structures / indexes to seamlessly integrate across disparate data sources.
- Pinpoint opportunities for lifecycle marketing programs and work collaboratively with business stakeholders to craft measurement plans that assess the effectiveness of targeted marketing executions.
- Explain complex modeling approaches in simple terms; develop compelling narratives that connect modeling results with marketing problems.
- Identify key business drivers in complex situations involving multivariate statistical analyses. Consider and explore multiple hypotheses to rationalize data relationships and trends.
- Design reports, data visualizations, and presentations to track marketing channel performance and communicate business impacts to senior marketing leadership teams.
- Translate strategic business questions into analyses that inform business decisions.
- Leverage analytic capabilities available through third party vendors.
- Communicate insights clearly to a broad audience, building a narrative that explains the causes of important business trends and events.
- Nurture strong working relationships across departments and cross-functional stakeholders based on trust and mutual respect. Communicate with senior stakeholders to balance stakeholder vis-à-vis analytics perspectives.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (e.g., Statistics, Business, Economics, etc.) or other quantitative disciplines. Advanced degree is preferred.
- 5+ years professional experience building machine learning models within Marketing (Customer Analytics, Loyalty program analytics, Media Optimization or related fields)
- Prior experience of building and productionize models in AWS is a must. Experience with Sagemaker, EC2, EMR, Glue.
- Strong knowledge of SQL and Python.
- Experience working with large enterprise databases, with demonstrated ability to independently query and prepare data for analyses.
- Experience with advanced analytical techniques, including time series forecasting, machine learning algorithms (supervised and un-supervised). Experience of Neural networks is a plus
- Experience with developing and activating against a customer segmentation.
- Experience with brick and mortar and/or e-commerce retailing a plus.
- Exceptional analytic skills coupled with solid business thinking.
- Self-directed, innovative thinker. In addition to a strong attention to detail, strong candidates will also be able to see the strategic implications for the business in the big picture. You are fluent in telling the story to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong candidates will have a curious mind, a passion for synthesizing information from multiple sources, the ability to interpret data through the lens of shopper behavior, and a habit of translating data into insights that drive action.
- Strong communication and presentation skills and ability to partner with internal stakeholders to shape marketing strategy and planning.
- Sense of humor a plus.
