About the Role

Smarter Sorting is looking for a Regulatory Data Analyst to join our regulatory product team as we scale to support a growing number of customers. This role is essential to our purpose and success with customers. The ideal candidate will be a regulatory geek meets data analyst who is detail-oriented and wants to help take our organization to the next level. The regulatory data analyst will be responsible for overall regulatory classification data excellence (accuracy, consistency) and serve as an internal expert while supporting the expansion of our classification services. The person in this role should be technically savvy, have strong reading comprehension and interest in regulations, and be a systems-thinker who can deliver simple yet effective solutions.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Regulatory research and documentation.
  • Write regulatory classification rules for our technology systems and services.
  • Manage the expert review tool to create training data sets and improve classification accuracy.
  • Systematically audit both machine and human classification.
  • Ad hoc support for internal and external customer inquiries regarding regulations, data, and classification.

Your Experience + Skills:

  • Regulatory program or product analyst within the consumer goods space, with strong classification experience.
  • 3-5 years hands-on experience in product stewardship, chemical compliance, or regulatory affairs in at least two of the following areas: (i) EPA hazardous waste (RCRA), (ii) Multimodal transportation classification (DOT/IATA/IMDG), (iii) OSHA and GHS, (iv) NFPA and IFC, (v) VOC, (vi) electronics recycling and battery stewardship. 
  • Superb reading comprehension with experience interpreting and operationalizing regulations or standards.
  • Skilled in querying, analyzing, and using data.
  • Uses data to make decisions, prioritize work, and classify products. 
  • Knowledge and practical experience using SQL is highly desired. 
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM field preferred, however, a four-year degree with relevant experience and skills will be considered. 

Your 1st month:

  • Learn everything there is to know about our company, our data, and our product suite.
  • Explore and work with our classification data, technology systems and services, and regulatory documentation.
  • Document and manage one of our regulatory services.
  • Learn and own our expert review tool, which creates training data sets and improves classification accuracy.

Your first 3 months:

  • Standardize the auditing process for transportation and waste classification.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert internally, publish and maintain a regulatory data FAQ for the company. 
  • Develop and maintain standardized procedure documents and flow charts for all major workstreams.

Your first 6 months:

  • If there are regulations with which you are unfamiliar – FIFRA, VOC, NFPA, etc. – you learn them.
  • Own the end-to-end classification for one of our core classification services.
  • Meet our customer and serve as a subject matter expert in customer-facing meetings.
