Duo Security, now a part of Cisco, is the leading provider of Trusted Access security and multi-factor authentication delivered through the cloud.

Duo’s mission is to make security simple for everyone. We were born from a hacker ethos and a desire to make the Internet a secure place. We believe in empowering people to follow their passions inside and outside of the office and enable every employee to bring their whole self to work.

Our team is our secret weapon. We run the spectrum from artists to analysts, low-key to high energy, and bring together a diversity of skill sets, experiences, and perspectives to solve what we consider to be the world's most pressing geopolitical challenge — transforming the security industry as we know it. Together we build solutions that are easy, effective, trustworthy, and enduring. And that’s why we are the most loved and trusted company in security.

About the team:

As Duo’s data science team, we use statistics and machine learning to bring new product capabilities to our customers and to empower our colleagues to make data-informed decisions. Our work depends on a robust ecosystem for discovering, deidentifying, accessing, and understanding data generated by Duo’s products. As a data applications engineer, you will help build, document, extend and maintain this data ecosystem. You will ensure that your peers in the R&D organization can discover and use data that guides us in building world class solutions to real customer problems.

Do you have a knack for understanding and interacting with a wide array of software systems? Can you find your way around a data warehouse? Do you want to work closely with a pragmatic and diverse group of data scientists, engineers, and security researchers? If yes, then you might be a good fit for this role.

As a Data Applications Engineer at Duo you will:

  • Work with data scientists, engineers, designers and product managers to understand their data needs.

  • Discover and document they way in which user behaviors get recorded in product data.

  • Extend our existing data collection pipelines to capture new information.

  • Evaluate, deploy, configure, and maintain commercial elements of our data ecosystem.

  • Support users across Duo’s R&D org as they interact with our data tools.

  • Ensure we accurately interpret data by building a deep understanding of how our customers use Duo’s products to solve their problems day to day.

  • Be a steward of responsible and compliant data collection and handling.

Skills you have:

  • The ability to quickly understand and interact with software systems by reading source code and documentation and communicating with software engineering teams.

  • Strong communication skills, including written and verbal communication with people of various backgrounds and levels of technical expertise.

  • Experience with system administration and configuration of commercial cloud software products.

  • Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation.

  • Scripting or software engineering experience, enabling you to extend and configure our existing data pipelines. An ability to create clear feature requests for the engineering team when needed, and an interest in extending your software engineering skills.

  • The ability to focus on details, notice unexpected patterns, and thoroughly document complex logic when called for to accurately interpret data.

  • Familiarity with data warehousing, ETL pipelines, dashboarding technologies, or similar components of data ecosystems.

  • Knowledge of SQL, sufficient to explore and aggregate data in our data warehouse.

  • Experience using the services of cloud providers such as AWS.

Even better if you have:

  • Security domain experience.

  • Software engineering experience with Python and Scala.

  • Familiarity with Duo’s products as a user or administrator.

  • Some practical experience with statistics, machine learning, or data science.

Reasons you should apply:

  • You are excited by the opportunity to collaborate with, teach, and learn from a group of colleagues with widely varying skillsets and knowledge.

  • You enjoy being challenged to learn new skills and context as part of your day to day work. Working in a new ecosystem means not knowing where the right solution path will lead.

  • A company culture of kindness, transparency, and learning. Employees love Duo.

  • Ability to positively impact millions of users. Customers love Duo.

Reasons this role may not be for you:

  • You dislike ambiguity. This is a new role and you will be working at the boundaries of what our systems can do. Solutions to problems will frequently be unprecedented.

Duo is committed to cultivating and preserving a culture of inclusion and connectedness. We are able to grow and learn better together with a diverse team of employees. The collective sum of the individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, innovation, self-expression, and talent that our employees invest in their work represents not only part of our culture, but our reputation and Duo’s achievement as well. In recruiting for our team, we welcome the unique contributions that all potential candidates can bring in terms of their education, opinions, culture, ethnicity, race, gender identity and expression, nationality, age, languages spoken, veteran’s status, religion, disability, sexual orientation and beliefs.

And if this role is exciting to you, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet all 100% of the description or qualifications. Finally and most importantly, we are a proud Equal Opportunity Employer.
