The Sr. Engineering Manager is responsible for leading teams of engineers on a day-to-day basis and ensures that projects are being completed on time and meet product/project expectations. Engineers look to the Engineering Manager for process, trouble-shooting, mentoring, technical expertise, and career growth opportunities. Under the leadership of the VP & Data Platform Architect, the Senior Engineering Manager partners with other managers and product owner, to ensure the successful ongoing implementation of a cloud-based data platform for our rapidly growing enterprise. The overarching objective of the platform is to make all data at Bright consistent, compliant and available at high velocity to all functional areas within the company and to our Care Partners outside the company.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Job 1 is to ensure teams regularly ship high quality software that drives the Bright Health business forward
  • Assist in driving the tactical implementation of an overarching data architecture vision and strategy
  • Operate high quality, cloud-based data services, ensuring uptime and performance within SLOs
  • Facilitate established processes for code reviews and QA, and help identify and implement tools that drive both
  • Collaborate with engineering leadership in the execution of a quality assurance plans
  • Deliver projects and products using the appropriate agile/lean project management methodologies
  • Lead sprint-level scrum team ceremonies, ensure daily and weekly ceremonies are a part of team culture
  • Lead in working with Bright InfoSec, SREs, and Microsoft resources in ensuring that teams can nimbly deploy to Azure, while maintaining a secure and compliant environment.
  • Collaborate with engineering leadership and individual contributors to conduct security and resiliency profiling exercises
  • Lead in producing high quality, team-level technical documentation, delegating to individual contributors, when appropriate
  • Work with engineering leadership, business and product owners to clarify roadmap initiatives and translate them into epics and stories
  • Lead the collaborative, dynamic planning process, prioritizing the work against the capacity and capability of the team
  • Remove roadblocks to productivity and provide problem-solving capability to individual contributors
  • Monitor capacity and skill set to determine hiring needs
  • Participate proactively in the recruiting and hiring process for qualified candidates across the Technology team
  • Conduct quarterly and annual reviews with each member of the team
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent experience required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience in designing and developing enterprise applications, with a strong preference for backend development experience and/or data-intensive applications
  • Three (3) or more years of demonstrated experience leading engineering teams, with hiring and performance review authority
  • Working experience at the enterprise level with public cloud providers, including AWS, Azure, GCP is strongly preferred.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience coding and managing APIs (REST, SOAP, RPC)
  • Five (5) or more years of experience with application development against database systems – including, at a minimum, RDBMS (SQL Server/Postgres/Oracle) and ideally familiarity with NoSQL systems as well
  • Three (3) or more years of experience organizing work and shipping code in an Agile scrum development environment
