Who We Are

Saatva is the Direct-to-consumer luxury mattress and home furnishings brand that aspires to help every consumer get a great night’s sleep.  At Saatva, we do more than sell mattresses to consumers. We are a brand that believes in consciousness and goodness — from what we put in our products, to how we treat our customers and each other. We believe our greatest potential is reached when we empower each other, and we believe in having a good time in the process. This commitment extends to a diverse and friendly environment that nurtures personal as well as professional growth.

Over the coming years, our product portfolio will grow beyond mattresses to encompass hundreds of home furnishing products.  To that end, Saatva is looking for a Director of Product Design with experience in the luxury e-commerce space to build and lead our UI/UX design team.  Acting as an advocate for the user, the Product Design Director will collaborate with product managers and developers to create the most elevated customer experience in the home furnishings space.  She/He will be responsible for developing and continuously improving a user centered approach to web and product development by working with multi-disciplinary teams including product managers, developers, testers, designers, and other stakeholders.

Your Responsibilities

  • Recruit, direct, motivate and grow a team of talented designers
  • Provide continuous support and guidance for all members of your team via 1:1 meetings, and by taking advantage of “teachable moments” that help them learn how to follow in your footsteps
  • Establish design culture and design methodologies across all steps of the iterative product design process from initial definition, to research/analysis, ideation, design, launch and validation
  • Partner closely with product managers, to ensure that our site experiences are as luxurious and reliable as our products and that our product roadmap aligns with that vision
  • Partner with product managers to inform and execute A/B testing roadmaps
  • Participate in regular Product demos and lead design critiques with other designers
  • Work closely with our marketing/advertising creative team who owns the responsibility to drive consumers to your sites, and ensure that the conversation started with consumers off-site continues on site
  • Actively work to understand our users’ needs, pain points, mindset, personas, and behaviors to advocate for the best possible and most impactful user experience
  • Create sketches, storyboards, journey maps, user flows, wireframes and prototypes to understand and organize complex asks into sophisticated UI and UX solutions
  • Iterate on and expand our pattern library / design systems
  • Keep up to date on emerging technologies and methodologies in the design and UI community
  • Ask smart questions, take risks and champion new ideas, never settling for the status quo

Requirements

  • 8+ years of digital product visual / experience design, with 2+ of those years in director-level management and at least 2 years of ecommerce design experience
  • Strong portfolio that demonstrates your creative and strategic problem-solving skills, and your ability to craft memorable, compelling, luxurious and efficient experiences that drive ROI
  • Experience building scalable systems that adhere to organized rules/structures and can get up to production speed quickly utilizing these systems
  • Ability to clearly articulate your design decisions, what problems they’re solving, and all of the various ways they should behave when implemented
  • Desire to work within a team, taking and giving criticism in order to achieve growth, and succeeding or failing as a team
  • Comfortable using tools like InVision, Sketch, and Zeplin and designing for a React based front end
  • High comfort level with modern design processes and best practices such as Design Sprint, Lean UX, etc and “lean startup” or Agile development methodologies
  • Firm believer in the power of Product/Design Thinking and the energy to evangelize it within the company

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary and benefits (Salary is DOE + competitive market rates)
  • Unlimited snacks, Our break areas stocked to the brim with cereal, snacks, La Croix, soda, Red Bull, Topo Chico, coffee, and more to keep you going throughout the day.
  • We're dog friendly! Bring your pooch to work at any of our offices.
  • Enjoy weekly catered lunches and chef-made meals at the office.
  • Fun company events, including intramural sports teams, holiday party, chili cookoff, pot lucks, and more.
  • We tangibly see the impact we have on lives — every day — by promoting healthy sleep and lifestyle behaviors.
  • We have the benefits of an established company with start-up like opportunities to grow, change and invent.
  • Most importantly, our team cares about collaborating well, building solutions that matter, and genuinely liking the work we do.

An Insider's view of Saatva

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

Very balanced, there is a big focus on making sure people here are able to live their lives, and if you're working late into the night or on weekends people wag their finger at you.

Sean

Software Engineer II

What does your typical day look like?

We work in an agile environment, which means we have a short stand up every morning to start our day where we check in with one another, give updates, and see if anyone can be of assistance in helping others with current work. The rest of the day fluctuates depending on what day it is. We have planning sessions and developer workshops weekly.

Megan

What makes someone successful on your team?

Collaboration is the name of the game here at Saatva. Questions are just as important as answers and together we find the right solutions through planning sessions, pair programming, and code reviews. If you're engaged with the problem and not just the ticket at hand, you'll see that contribution manifest in your own success as well as the team's.

Meredith

Technical Lead & Senior Software Engineer

What is your vision for the company?

My vision for Saatva Engineering is to be the place where you can do the best work of your career. Due to our unique market opportunity we have the unusual combination of a ten year track record and tremendous growth. Growth brings significant challenges, both technical and professional, but it rewards those willing to work together.

Scott

Vice President of Engineering

What kinds of technical challenges do you and your team face?

We regularly receive obscure, reports of issues faced with multiple systems and we need to be able to determine what the actual problem is and come up with a game-plan on how to resolve this and prevent it from happening in the future. Luckily, on my team, I regularly surround myself with some of the most knowledgeable developers to help me.
