Lead Technical Writer - App Security & Offensive Security

About This Role

In this role, you’ll:

  • Drive the direction, strategy, and vision for our AppSec and OffSec product documentation, content experiences, and self-service educational needs. 

  • Work closely with our User Experience, Product Management, and Development teams to build technical content that will help our users really understand how to solve their real world security problems.

  • Work closely with our Research, Support and Customer Success teams to understand how our customers actually use and deploy our products in the real world.

  • Help create and design content experiences that guide our customers to achieve their outcomes. 

  • Support the rest of the documentation team on other projects as needed.

  • Communicate project statuses and blockers to the team.

  • Attend regular status meetings with Product Management and User Experience to sync on status and identify upcoming documentation needs.

  • Work with designers to identify contextual help needs and creating content for in-product content experiences.

  • Write a lot of technical content and build developer driven documentation. 

  • Manage a small team of UX writers; mentor and onboard new writers, socialize writing processes, and be a brand evangelizer for our team. 

  • Create deep partnerships with our internal stakeholders to establish the processes, communication channels necessary for feedback, collaboration, and insights. 

  • Lead the vision and direction for content on your product team. 

  • Build a comprehensive documentation strategy that clearly convey vision, intended outcomes, and steps to achieve them. 

  • Create detailed feature requirement documents that clearly outline use cases, best practices, technical constraints

  • Be a positive, supportive, kind, and thoughtful member of our Rapid7 family.

Your Skills and Passions 

To thrive in this role, you should have:

  • Experience growing and mentoring a team of writers. 

  • A strong desire to turn plans into action. 

  • An obsession with grammar and writing rules. 

  • An intense passion for technology and the ability to write about it.

  • Very strong technical knowledge; cybersecurity is a major plus.

  • Experience with content design. 

  • An understanding of how networks and the internet work.

  • Experience working with REST APIs.

  • Experience working with regex, Git, JIRA, Markdown, Pendo, Sketch, and Jenkins.

  • Experience creating documentation for internal and external audiences.

  • Experience working directly with a software development team.

  • Experience building, implementing, and socializing processes. 

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to effectively work across a diverse set of teams. 

  • The ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • The ability to be a team player.

  • The right mix of technical knowledge, writing skills, and analytical skills to deliver awesome documentation.

  • The desire and ability to delve into the technical details and understand what needs to be documented and how.

  • The tenacity, humor, and people skills to work with and obtain information from a wide variety of team members.

  • A desire to help others and lift teammates up. 

And finally, it’d also be extra nice if you have the following education and experience:

  • BA/BS degree in English, Technical Writing, Technical Communications, Journalism, Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience

  • 7+ years of experience in writing technical content or documentation
