The Opportunity

As the leading real-time development platform for gaming, interactive 3D design visualization, augmented and virtual reality, Unity is helping bring creations of all kinds to life faster than ever before. We believe the world is a better place with more creators in it, and we are making more tools to arm a wider audience to reach their creative potential. There are hundreds of millions of people who make digital content every day, mostly on their mobile devices, and Unity is working to bring real-time 3D capabilities to them.

As the Art Director for Next Gen Creators, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities to push products further, and execute on solutions.

You will be responsible for artistic leadership and contribute to the entire design and production process - concept, aesthetic development, and delivery of visually compelling 3D experiences and assets. You must be able to work in the creative styles that resonate with the many different target audiences across Unity’s products for Next Gen Creators. These products will often be mobile, and are not solely game-related.

You should be comfortable in a fast-paced, continuously evolving environment, and able to take-in ideas from multiple points of view and offer solutions.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented with high standards for aesthetics, craft, and execution. You should be comfortable with balancing these artistic standards with the business needs of a varied set of products. This team operates as a start-up and as such you should also be passionate about creating art and being in the weeds as well as managing a small team.

This position is part of the Next Gen Creators product team and reports to the Director of Product Management.

What you’ll be doing

  • Work closely with stakeholders to lead the design and implementation of a cohesive visual style for a product
  • Work in collaboration with Product Design, Product Management, Product Marketing, Engineering, Data Science, and User Research to understand our users and create styles and concepts that will inspire their creativity
  • Work closely with internal and external art teams to set the design for and source 2D and 3D assets that complement and push the product and feature set
  • Communicate vision, guide execution, and ensure on-brand delivery of assets at a high level of quality
  • Seek out art and cultural trends to expand creative opportunities for our target audiences

What we’re looking for

  • Experience as an Environmental Artist, Character Artist, or Art Director at a game studio, a creative tooling company, or a company in the 3D/AR/VR/XR technology space
  • Demonstrated presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the experience communicating complex, sometimes abstract, concepts clearly and persuasively and a track record of delivering highly engaging, interactive experiences
  • Demonstrated experience with Adobe Creative Suite software and with a 3D engine, bonus points for Unity experience
  • Demonstrated experience Cinema 4D, Maya, Blender or other DCC tools
  • A link to an online portfolio showcasing relevant work, as well as demonstrated experience coordinating, directing, and guiding the work of other artists and designers

You might also have

  • An online portfolio showcasing relevant work
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Direct experience using the Unity editor is a plus
