Come work at Smarter Sorting!

Smarter Sorting is in an incredible position.  The company has created the product needed to make the circular economy possible.  We have landed giant customers, 3 of the largest retailers on the planet, and over 1,150 suppliers, including half of the top 10 consumer product manufacturers worldwide.  We are, in fact, changing the world.

This is where you come in.

The Senior Product Designer is a critical new team member, essential to helping us achieve Smarter Sorting’s purpose in the market and with our own team. Product Designers at Smarter Sorting are involved in every stage of the product development process. They work closely with product managers, engineers, and other designers to solve some of the messiest problems around consumer goods regulation, disposal, transportation, and more. We’re systems thinkers who obsess over creating products and features that are easy to understand, have measurable success, deliver value to our customers, and are—dare we say—delightful! We get excited about spreadsheets and beautiful data sets, as well as well conducted qualitative research, thoughtful user flows, and a meticulous UI design.

An Insider's view of Smarter Sorting

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

One thing that continually impresses me about Smarter Sorting is how diverse our passions are outside of work and how we support each other in our personal experiences. I’ve known Sorters who author books, build their own planes, judge BMX in the Olympics, travel for volleyball tournaments, and DJ at some of Austin’s coolest venues.

Product Manager

What projects are you most excited about?

I’m most excited about our data projects surrounding Snowflake. Being able to bring data together from different source types and combine and analyze it in one place is a game changer for us. It allows everyone in the company to see the bigger picture of all the data we’re using. And as we know more, we do better!

Principle Engineer

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

I started as an intern with Smarter Sorting in 2016 and since then I have been able to wear many hats and truly find a role within the company that suits my strengths and interests. The encouragement and support I have received throughout my career has helped me grow professionally in more ways that I could have imagined.

Technical Project Manager

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

Building resilient software demands iterative problem solving and deliberation. This type of creative work requires focus and time to get into a flow. We work to create a routine for the team that minimizes distractions and allows for more opportunity to collaborate and reach a flow state of mind.

VP of Engineering

What are some things you learned at the company?

I came to the tech world from another industry. I had to quickly understand a new language, what we fondly call “nerd speak”. Moreover, I became adept at translating information and feedback between our customers and the product and development teams.
