Sr. UX Designer

| Austin
Based in the Bohemian Cowboy capital of the world, Austin, Texas, Literati is a new kind of bookseller. Our mission is simple: to make parents and children love reading together by building a community that sparkles with life, curiosity, and imagination. We have more investors than employees, so if you’re a team player, an expert with a beginner’s mind, a rainmaker, or have a hint of alchemy up your sleeve, then we definitely want to talk with you!
We are looking for a talented, down-to-earth UX Designer experienced in both web and mobile. This is a startup: You’ll enjoy donning many hats and work closely with our Creative Director. You thrive on informed iteration in order to design experiences that work at scale. You have an impeccable design sense, and a keen eye for detail and craft. Collaboration is in your DNA, but you aren’t afraid to prioritize, make decisions and communicate. You’ll come in and make an immediate impact to our small (but mighty) design team, and play a large role in representing our brand visually as a whole.

What You'll Do...

  • Work collaboratively with the Creative team, Engineering, Product, Marketing, and Customer Experience on user experience needs throughout different phases of the project (planning, pre-work, elaboration and post-work)
  • Translate concepts into user journeys, wireframes, mockups and prototypes that lead to intuitive and delightful user experiences for web and mobile experiences
  • Quickly implement and fine-tune new and existing workflows that will create and optimize the user experience
  • Design and envision future experiences iteratively in a dynamic environment by being mindful of how the experience needs to evolve over time
  • Leverage user feedback as well as UI/UX best practices to drive and influence design decisions
  • Identify UI/UX problems and devise elegant solutions with creativity (e.g. usability, findability)
  • Support your design work using all available insights including quantitative data and site metrics, customer feedback, and usability findings
  • Provide innovative, customer centric, information and interaction design recommendations that contribute to an enhanced user experience.
  • Always advocate for the consumer's needs, and be able to tell our brand story through creative execution

Who You Are...

  • A Designer. You have an impeccable design sense, and a keen eye for detail and craft.
  • An Anthropologist at Heart. You love to research and hypothesize elegant solutions.
  • Passionate. Designing global products that are intuitive and bring joy and value to consumers’ lives floats your boat.
  • Empathetic. You understand your customer’s needs, then skillfully translate them into specific interaction and UI designs.
  • Adaptable. You thrive on informed iteration in order to design experiences that work, and at scale.
  • A Creator. Building elegant solutions for a beautiful customer experience is in your genes.
  • Tool Agnostic. Sure you have preferences in order to be efficient, but you care more about what you're making than what you're using to make it.
  • A Collaborator. It’s in your DNA, but you aren’t afraid to prioritize, make decisions and communicate with authority.
  • A Communicator. You understand the importance of being able to both brainstorm with the wider team as well as articulate your individual design decisions. You’re all about efficiency and are able to work in a fast-paced environment and rely on strong communication skills to keep on task & flag project inconsistencies. You are always accountable for your own tasks but not afraid to ask for help when needed. You can take criticism and put it towards to bettering your work while giving constructive feedback that empowers your team.
  • Humble. Very humble. Ego? Not your amigo.
  • Experienced. You're still learning, we all are, but you have a solid base of knowledge in working with product, marketing in the e-commerce world, and have a firm grasp of UX design principles.
  • Impeccable. Pixel perfection. Sharp, clean design.
  • A Problem Solver. You use business knowledge, innovative thinking, and sound judgment to solve problems.
  • Current. You keep your finger on the pulse of UI/UX design. You're constantly seeking ways to create useful, usable, and delightful new experiences as well as innovate our existing presence.
  • Up For A Challenge. You believe that just because something is difficult doesn't mean it should go unexplored. In fact, that might be validation that it’s worth trying, right?
  • Bookish. You live for the infinite ways in which books are a mirror for our humanity.

What You Need...

  • Education: Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in, preference to Master’s Degree in Human Computer Interaction, Engineering, Computer Science, Design or equivalent education/experience
  • Experience: Three or more years of UI/UX design experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience designing complex solutions for web products
  • Expertise in standard UI/UX software such as Sketch, OmniGraffle, Axure, InVision, UXPin, Balsamiq, Adobe, Framer, and the like is a must. Basic HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript skills are a plus.
  • Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders to understand detailed requirements and design complete user experiences that meet product needs and vision.
  • Extensive experience in using UI/UX design best practices to design solutions, and a deep understanding of responsive design.
  • A solid grasp of user-centered design (UCD), planning and conducting user research, user testing, A/B testing, rapid prototyping, heuristic analysis, usability and accessibility concerns.
  • Passion for all things UI/UX and other areas of design and innovation to resolve user pain points. Research and showcase knowledge in the industry’s latest trends and technologies.
  • Previous Mobile design experience preferred
  • Previous eCommerce design experience preferred

An Insider's view of Literati

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

You do the work, so you deserve the rest. Your individual work-life balance will vary based on the team that you work with, but in Customer Support, our associates can expect to regularly have a 40-hour work week and be paid time-and-a-half for extra hours worked. We also have regularly scheduled work-from-home hours!

Ashley Horton

Sr Customer Support Manager

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

We pride ourselves on being a small team in order to stay nimble, so collaboration across teams is as easy as turning around and chatting with colleagues a few desks away. We’ll break out for working sessions as we dig into specific projects, gathering feedback from key stakeholders in order to set a roadmap in motion.

Mike Tully

Sr Software Engineer

What makes someone successful on your team?

Humility, grit, courage, and dedication (on a cellular level) to building the world’s most beloved literary brand. Expertise in one’s craft is critical, but an expert with a beginner’s mind is far more likely to innovate in unprecedented ways. As stewards of the book object, our team’s success rests in our ability to sow empathy at every turn.

Kelly Carroll

Co-Founder/Creative Director

What unique initiatives do you have that encourage innovation?

One thing I love from my time at Google was "20% time" which allows people to spend up to one day a week working on a passion project that doesn't necessarily tie into the roadmap. Just eliminating all process and approval is a critical first step. Innovation looks absurd out the gate.

Jess Ewing

What’s the vibe like in the office?

The office space is for makers who answered the call to adventure. We thrive at the intersection of artisan-crafted daydreams and cutting-edge tech. You’ll see people that are laser-focused on driving progress to OKRs. We think for ourselves, understand how our strategies impact others, and never settle for less than world-class brand experiences!
