Data Engineer (AWS)

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join our team in Austin TX who is passionate about data and the insights that large amounts of data sets can provide. The candidate will work with Data scientists (ML/AI), Business Analysts, Consultants, Product Managers and other stakeholders across organization and client base.  Ideal applicants will have experience delivering RESTful analytical software and data science tools using microservices written in Java deployed on AWS. This position in the Data Science Tools team will play a defining role in building and maintaining the tools that empower W2O’s team of analysts and data scientists to deliver industry-defining work to some of the biggest brands in the world.

Our Data Science Tools team spans our offices in Austin and San Francisco. The full-stack software engineering team uses Java, JavaScript, and Python to deliver AOS, W2O’s cloud-native internal data platform, and its ecosystem of tools to internal users. This position is a unique opportunity to build and shape the software team at an industry-leading firm while learning the in-demand field of analytics and data science from some of the best practitioners in the industry.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Product and Data Science teams to identify new client-driven use cases
  • Design, implement and support an analytical data infrastructure
  • Manage AWS resources including EC2, EMR, S3, Athena, Glue, Redshift, SageMaker, etc
  • Manage GCP resources including BigQuery
  • Build and deploy data management code in Java and/or Python
  • Plan and execute data modeling, ETL development, and data warehousing tasks
  • Publish reports on data status and health
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of the team, including code reviews, build health management, release communications, and so on
  • Co-own the software development process – including agile processes, coding standards, code metrics, build standards, and so on – to nurture the growing development team
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders across the business at all levels of the company to drive adoption of new tools and identify new opportunities for products

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences or engineering field (STEM), or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years managing “big data” infrastructure in the cloud
  • Experience as a key member of an engineering team participating in the complete product development lifecycle of successfully launched applications
  • Positive track record delivering cloud-based applications, especially on AWS
  • Comfort working in an agile, CI/CD-based development process
  • Solid grasp of principles, patterns, and practice of data architecture and infrastructure design
  • Conflict-free, egoless attitude towards software development
  • Passion for cross-mentorship across all levels of the organization
  • Ability to thrive on a distributed team with remote and near-shore engineers

Preferred Skills

  • Master’s degree or cloud certifications, especially AWS
  • Previous experience delivering software in the Scrum process
  • Previous experience using persistence technologies like PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch, DynamoDB
  • Previous experience partnering with frontend teams using Node/React
  • Previous experience building analytical systems
  • Previous experience creating tools for internal users
  • Experience in at least one reporting Tool, preferably Tableau
  • Knowledge of healthcare and pharmaceutical coding sets and crosswalks (NPI, DRG, CPT, ICD-10, GPI, NDC, RxNorm, LOINC)
