Design Engineer (SPG)
Hyliion is looking for a Special Projects Group (SPG) Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Austin. This full-time position offers the opportunity to be a part of a fast-growing company that is revolutionizing the Class 8 trucking industry. We are seeking exceptionally talented individuals that are highly motivated to revolutionize an industry, reduce the use of fuel and have some fun. You will be joining an experienced engineering team in the innovation, design, simulation, implementation, and testing of electrical powertrain systems. Reports to Senior Project Manager.

- Support the innovation and engineering development of prototype vehicles and their sub-systems to support Hyliion’s future technology needs
- Evaluate or perform benchmarking of incumbent, competitive, or innovative technology surrounding the Vehicle Electrification space
- Drive IP to support provisional and patent application activities
- Perform FEA, Thermal and CFD analysis to develop optimized engineering solutions
- Create hardware designs and associated released prints to procure prototype parts
- Identify and manage strategic supply base to rapidly produce prototypes
- Work with internal team and suppliers to manage requirements, specifications, timing, costs, and validation plans to ensure that product deliverables are met
- Create and manage APQP documentation including FMEAs and DVP&Rs
- Create and manage project plans for assigned components and sub-systems
- Provide design direction to supplemental designers, check engineering prints
- Work with business development team to Interpret customer requirements and develop system and sub-system product specifications
- Support VAVE activities to identify opportunities for cost reduction
- Manage cost models, DFM, and validation activities
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:
- Proven experience in automotive, aerospace, or other similar industry and associated toolsets
- Understanding of automotive powertrain systems including both traditional and hybrid
- Understanding of vibration (including modal) and vibration reduction strategies highly advantageous
- Ability to read, understand and generate electrical manufacturing documentation
- Strong follow-through and self-starting nature
- Ability to communicate verbally effectively and positively and in writing with customers (internal and external), to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments
- Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions
- Position will involve travel (10% of time) to visiting engineering providers and hardware suppliers
- Ability to work well in a high-paced environment, set and meet appropriate deadlines
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Competency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Willingness and ability to work more than 8 hours a day to ensure that deadlines are achieved weekly hours may regularly be between 50-60 during busy time periods
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 15+ Years’ Experience
Preferred Qualifications/Skills:
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Vehicle Electrification experience
- Modelling and Controls experience
- Test and Validation experience
- Experience in battery design and A/C systems
- Experience in electrical, controls, and wiring systems
- Low-volume fabrication and High-volume manufacturing techniques
- Expert CAD user
