About the department
Cloudflare’s Developer Relations team is embedded within the Product Marketing team to improve the developer awareness and adoption of Cloudflare’s products and developer platform.
The life of a Developer Advocate brings an array of different activities. A typical week may include building or teaching a tutorial workshop, building a project using the product in your focus area, producing several meetups across multiple locations, sponsoring and staffing a developer conference, filing issues every time you find room for improvement, writing blog posts, or other educational content, improving docs, and giving a talk at a conference about your projects, or coaching others on their conference talks.
What you'll do
As a Developer Advocate at Cloudflare, you are responsible for walking a mile in the shoes of the developer using a number of Cloudflare developer-facing products (see developers.cloudflare.com) and make sure that the developers in the community have a smooth journey and can accomplish their goals. The ideal candidate will have at least 2-3 years of experience in engineering or developer relations. You should be capable of building products/use cases/tutorials as well as explaining them to technical audiences. This role is expected to be approximately 25% coding, 25% writing/blogging/documentation, 25% event/conference production, and 25% external and internal partnerships management.
You may be doing something different every day, and the flexibility to master all relevant skills on the fly to handle new projects is important. A willingness to rapidly experiment, take on new projects, and adjust plans depending on company needs is a must. Potential projects include but aren’t limited to: build some cool projects that can be used as code examples, negotiating conference sponsorships, writing technical blog posts and tutorials, producing and/or speaking at meetup events, supporting external developers and improving their developer experience, and forming partnerships with meetup organizers.
Travel to global conferences and different Cloudflare offices will be frequent. On average, you should expect to travel ~30% of the time, though there will be times where conferences are stacked together and travel may reach 50%+.
- Produce, promote, and staff meetup events and conferences that entertain and educate
- Produce The Serverlist newsletter. Curate great content and work with internal teams to publish it.
- Sponsor and produce Cloudflare’s presence at developer conferences
- Work cross functionally with various internal teams, across time zones
- Manage external partnerships with meetup and conference organizers, key developer community leaders, and developer content creators.
- Manage several Cloudflare meetup communities by managing communications and producing meetup events.
- Keep track of developer feedback and brainstorm new ideas for ways to better engage the developer community
- Write copy and content for a developer audience that is relevant and engaging
- Use metrics to track success of projects and regularly report on progress or areas of opportunity
Examples of desirable skills, knowledge and experience
- Minimum of 2-3 years proven experience in engineering or developer relations roles
- Technical writing experience
- Excellent verbal communication, public speaking skills
