Hyliion is excited to open the search for a Director of High Voltage Battery (HVB) to lead the tactical delivery of the commercialized Hyliion HVB. As a Director, you will be responsible for building and leading an outstanding team of engineers, scientists and prototype technicians. As a Chief Engineer, you will apply automotive tools and methodologies to ensure that products meet all Functional, FMVSS and ISO compliance requirements. It is also expected that you will manage outside engineering partners and Tier one suppliers to ensure that all projects are on track. This critical role reports directly to the VP of Powertrain Engineering.

  • Manage commercialization projects for Hyliion’s next generation HVB solutions involving multiple products
  • HVB could be based on LTO, NMC or other leading chemistries.
  • Manage requirements and specifications of HVB, BMS, Thermal System, LV & HV E/E systems and other related sub-systems and components.
  • Develop and manage performance & cost models and technology roadmaps
  • Identify Tier 1 suppliers, support supplier selection process and manage engineering service suppliers.
  • Provide daily engineering direction and support for mechanical, electrical, battery, software and controls
  • Provide regular project updates to the Hyliion leadership team on progress & roadblocks
  • Responsible for leading product certification process and ensuring product meets functional, FMVSS and ISO requirements
  • Ensure simulation and analysis tasks as done according to program timeline. Provide guidance to engineering teams performing simulation or testing activities.
  • Interpret customer and marketing team requirements to generate system and sub-system product specifications
  • Support the creation of key APQP documents including FMEAs and DVP&Rs to drive product reliability and robustness
  • Support problem resolution activities, assist in the facilitation of 8D workshops and the application of the methodologies
  • Actively mentor and coach engineering team members in various areas including design, simulation, and product validation
  • Support the development of cost models for mechanical, electrical and battery system components
  • Check tolerance stack-ups and engineering prints prior to final sign-off
  • Support the development of company product roadmaps supported by extensive industry and product knowledge
  • Support high volume manufacturing activities including product launch support
  • Represent Hyliion and present technical papers at key industry conferences
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Strong understanding Class-8 trucks, their sub-systems and application requirements
  • Experienced in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of structural systems is a plus
  • Experience in thermal system modelling, system specification development and component selection
  • Experience in HVB Thermal Systems highly advantageous
  • High volume manufacturing experience
  • Experience in CFD, EMC or Thermal Analysis
  • Experienced in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of structural systems is a plus
  • Automotive industry and associated toolset expertise (FMEAs, DVP&Rs)
  • Strong follow-through and self-starting nature
  • Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions
  • Strong software tools proficiency in Solid Modeling and Project Data/Lifecycle Management
  • Position will involve travel visiting engineering providers and hardware suppliers
  • Ability to work well in a high-paced environment, set and meet appropriate deadlines
  • Ability to positively and effectively communicate with customers (internal and external), to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments

Required Qualifications:

  • 15-20 year experience in automotive electrification environment
  • Masters in Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • Expert in high voltage and associated safety protocols
  • Expert in vehicle electrification, powertrain and vehicle certification standards, drivetrain, battery technologies, electrical and wiring systems, NVH, instrumentation and methodologies
  • Expert in ISO 26262 safety standards and vehicle safety systems
  • Expert in vehicle controls, calibration and software
