RapidDeploy is actively seeking a Director of US Engineering to lead our rapidly growing team of engineers. As our Director of Engineering, you will provide the vision and direction of our technical roadmap, and maintain alignment of US feature teams to business and technical delivery expectations. You will remove roadblocks for the U.S. Engineering teams and work closely to align with Cape Town Engineering.
Responsibilities
- Provide the vision and direction of the Technical Roadmap
- Stay in tune with the Product Roadmap and deadlines especially where the US Teams are involved
- Understand and adopt the Architecture Vision from the CTO & Director of Innovation
- Assist & enable the VP Engineering with creating, maintaining and publishing Architecture Strategy and Architecture Decision Guidelines
- Attend all your team’s Sprint Planning sessions, and hold Team Leads accountable to RapidDeploy quality standards, and act as an advocate for RapidDeploy organizational OKRs.
- Provide team with technical guidance in accordance with architectural strategy
- Partner closely with Senior Scrum Master, and routinely and proactively facilitate knowledge sharing with Agility Team
- Understand all of the components and features that your teams are accountable for, and communicate with Product Leadership to ensure consistent alignment
- Ensure US Engineering team is in synch with SA Engineering team, by facilitating best practices cross-country, encouraging collaboration, and finding opportunities to connect your team’s work to RapidDeploy’s mission.
- Maintain alignment of US feature teams to business and technical delivery expectations, and act as a point of contact for escalations and leadership communications. Communicate effectively with business leaders across RapidDeploy to ensure visibility and encourage partnership.
- Work with sometimes ambiguous / conceptual requirements and guide the technical team to provide functionality with the right amount of engineering
- Working closely with other development managers to make sure that we are not “re-inventing the wheel” in other teams (This includes Architecture, Agility, Infrastructure, Security and QA)
- Keeping track of “Complexity/Technical Debt” effort and log “why” it was required across you areas of responsibilities.
- Making sure that all the Teams are following the Release Process as defined by the QA Manager
- Assist the Product Team in T-Shirt sizing of new feature requests (only to assist in validation of feature request)
- Making sure that all Teams are following the Software Engineering Ways of Work (Definition of Ready, Definition of Done, Scrum, Standards), and continually educate on and reaffirm these values in team meetings.
- Documenting processes and own the Software Engineering Handbook
- First point of call for Support Query Escalations for the US Engineering teams
- First point of call for internal product delivery queries for the US Engineering teams/projects
- Find ways to make work visible (planned, unplanned, changes and risk) and communicate regularly
- Manage recruiting lifecycle for Engineering teams in US, including proactive engagement with HR to scope, staff, and onboard new positions. Ensure new hires are technically competent and meet organizational needs.
- Manage a complex and growing team, by coaching and upskilling team members, and serving as a first line of support for HR matters. Partner closely with HR on team performance, employee retention, and best practices.

What this role is not:
- I use Azure DevOps to perform my function, I am not the Administrator.
- I am responsible for publishing the Engineering SDLC but am not solely accountable for all the content. This is a combined effort with the Engineering Managers.
- I am an expert in our delivery process, not in: Engineering tooling/Actual code being written
- I create visibility throughout all the delivery phases, I am not the Release Manager.
