Hyliion is seeking an energetic, passionate, and experienced battery / powertrain engineering manager to lead all battery engineering and R&D commercialization activities for the company. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the manager of Battery Engineering will lead a team of 2-3 engineers across developing and commercializing the future battery technology for the company.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible to drive Hyliion’s battery pack and system commercialization efforts
  • Design, Development, and Validation of Battery Pack and Modules for electrified propulsion roadmap
  • Lead to bridge advanced architecture team solutions from concept to sourcing to execution
  • Partner with Purchasing and Manufacturing for strategic buy and make decisions
  • Optimize cost, quality, and on-time delivery by improving the efficiency of all hardware development activities
  • Define & Execute Technical Roadmaps for each battery system; mHEV, PHEV and BEV
  • Design, develop, and release each battery system
  • Lead the industrialization of battery systems through cross-functional platform teams to meet Programs KPI’s
  • Define and implement strategies for synergies among the programs adopting a modular approach, minimizing complexity and leveraging technology/architecture re-use
  • Value Optimization and Quality Improvement programs
  • Carry out materials, formulation, and design evaluations for new products or new generations of products, including active materials, additives, separator, and other inactive materials.
  • Carry out electrode design optimizations to achieve customer/market requirements on performance, safety, reliability, and cost.
  • Work closely with product development and manufacturing engineering to support the transfer of released designs to production.
  • Develop and validate component and assembly level specifications of electrochemical component materials and assemblies.
  • Develop characterization equipment and test methods for materials, components and cells.
  • Investigate cell reactions and conduct failure mode analysis to identify root causes and generate novel solutions.
  • Resident expert on science and models in details of battery materials, electrode formulation, and chemical formation mechanism.
  • Work with suppliers and strategic partners to exchange technical information and enable access to advanced research.
  • Create prototype and design of electrical and electronic components and systems for commercial vehicles. Integrate new emerging technologies into vehicle architecture.
  • Perform the design and development of assigned elements of wiring harnesses, routings and guides system level schematics or other embedded electronic control modules.
  • Stay abreast of emerging industry trends in the field of commercial vehicle electrical development and technology. Manage processes to maintain schedule, budget, and functionality.
  • Utilize PoE to lead creation of a battery pack for a new vehicle through the Balanced Architecture Phase of product development (ahead of GPDP Kickoff), using appropriate technologies from component technology roadmaps
  • Lead creation of Battery Pack system and subsystem math models and negotiate pack requirements
  • Ensure pack meets all functional requirements
  •  Lead technical resolution for Battery Pack analysis and component level issues.
  • Other duties as assigned

Program Management Responsibilities:

  • Organize and lead effective project teams and project managers around Battery programs
  • Ensure delivery of customer deliverables and Hyliion objectives
  • Manage multiple project plans: scope, timing, procurement, validation, APQP, product approval, start of production, etc.
  • Schedule and execute design reviews and project gate reviews
  • Maintain project tracking documentation
  • Serve as primary customer project team representative for engineering organization
  • Daily interface with cross functional team
  • Monthly Business Team and Engineering Flawless Launch reports
  • Position owns the delivery of a flawless launch

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  •  Understanding of the key functional parameters that can be varied in order to meet higher level system requirements, and the optimum system architecture to meet the vehicle level functional objectives
  • Understanding of the engineering development processes to ensure and optimize design development
  • Experience working with engineering teams to develop product technology roadmaps
  • Experience leading, developing and managing multiple projects across several locations
  • Experience in the automotive sector and understanding of automotive systems, program management, and industry standards
  • Track record of improving quality and on time delivery across the engineering organization
  • Experience successfully launching new products on time and successfully leading investments to expand engineering capabilities in the region
  • Experience establishing and working in partnerships with global suppliers
  • Solid track record of delivering results
  • Proven ability to understand business partner organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Proven experience in planning, organizing, and maintaining relationships with internal customer organizations.
  • Strong analytical, evaluating and problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience introducing new tools and capabilities into an organization
  • Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities judiciously
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience interacting with business customers and colleagues internationally.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to present ideas effectively
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language
  • Ability to motivate in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Well-honed quantitative, problem solving, and analytical skills.  Knowledge of business case and P&L financials

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering; Master’s preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of product development experience in battery electrified propulsion systems with a strong understanding of battery systems, packs, cells, materials, and control systems
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering specializing in program execution

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic ERP experience

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

 

Work Environment:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • Ability to work in extreme climates for long periods
  • Ability to drive and/or work up to 10 hours a day
  • High tolerance for direct sunlight
  • Up to 10-15% business travel. Tolerance for flying
