Polychain Labs is a small, senior team of infrastructure engineers enabling some of the largest cryptocurrency holders to actively participate in new networks and opportunities. We work with founders to launch new networks and are often the largest proof-of-stake participants from launch day on. This security engineering role will play a key effort to reduce risk as we participate in novel networks, detect anomalies and assist in the design of new protections.

Job Responsibilities

  • Detection & Response: Understanding, instrumenting and automating high-signal alerts and appropriate responses from production environments that provide early indicators of compromise.
  • Infrastructure Hardening: Working with infrastructure engineers to design and implement hardened, layered infrastructure.
  • Asset Research: Understanding and modeling unique risks to our participation across networks, especially those that could result in loss of funds.  Monitor for unsafe conditions and feed results back to help design stronger protections that protect our customers.
  • Risk Modeling: Sourcing and evaluating risks from diverse perspectives across and external to our team.  Prioritizing security efforts based on these risk assessments.
  • Application Audit: Implement automation and processes that improve the security of the applications that we’re developing and running.

Requirements

  • Experience working with production environments at any scale and the ways in which they can fail.
  • Working knowledge of cryptographic systems and available protections.
  • Thinks automation-first and repeatedly replaces manual toil with engineering automated systems.

Location

Unit 410 is fully remote and distributed across the U.S, with a central hub in Austin, Texas for in-person engineering operations. However, our team makes in-person time a priority with by flying everyone out for all hands company offsites once every 6 months.

What are some social events your company does?

Every 6 months, we have a company offsite for a week and get to bond as a team while enjoying time off together. . While remote, we also make sure to have casual social meetings and celebrations when we launch new networks or accomplish a task. It is a very welcoming and casual vibe, and a good balance of work and play.

What are some things you learned at the company?

Ensuring the reliability of our monitoring infrastructure often requires complex testing environments in which we can simulate tail-risk events occurring. Since coming aboard, I have learned how to effectively create these test environments which we use to test and harden our infrastructure.

How do you make yourself accessible to the rest of the team?

As a leader I prioritize responsiveness over real-time chat and other tools (pull / merge requests). I block multiple times during every day to catch-up on any influx of questions / inbound that requires a response. I live by Inbox Zero and let folks know if I will not respond for a bit and when to expect a response.

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

We do not have a strict 9-5 schedule, but rather something along the lines of: “do what you need to get done when you can.” The thing I’ve enjoyed most about this is that I’ve been able to shape my schedule according to what works best for me.
