Hyliion is looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team in Austin. This full-time position offers the opportunity to be a part of a fast-growing company that is revolutionizing the trucking industry. We are seeking exceptionally talented individuals that are highly motivated to revolutionize an industry, reduce the use of fuel and have some fun.  You will be joining an experienced engineering team in the design, simulation, implementation, and testing of electrical powertrain systems.  In this role, you will be developing the subsystem of the vehicle, taking designs from the conceptual stage through final implementation and production.

  • Lead design and release of efforts for automotive hybrid solutions including mechanical and electromechanical systems for Class 8 truck applications
  • Work with internal team and suppliers to manage requirements, specifications, timing, costs, and validation plans to ensure that product objectives are met
  • Create, modify, and release mechanical designs for manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, and cost. Generate solid models and engineering drawings with appropriate GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5-2018 as needed.
  • Ensure that products meet all functional and performance targets, as well as necessary safety and emission compliance requirements
  • Lead the development of key quality and validation documentation including FMEAs, DVP&Rs to establish key failure modes and develop associated product validation plans
  • Create and manage project plans for assigned components and sub-systems
  • Work with business development team to Interpret customer requirements and develop system and sub-system product specifications
  • Support VAVE activities to reduce overall costs

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:

  • Strong follow-through and self-starting nature
  • Thorough understanding of automotive powertrain and drivetrain components and systems; Class 8, heavy duty truck, and electric vehicle experience preferred
  • Proven expert in automotive industry and associated toolset expertise. Capable of providing design direction to the engineering team on core mechanical design principles.
  • Strong experience with fabrication techniques including sheet metal forming, machining, casting, and high-volume manufacturing methods
  • Proven experience in designing components, bolted joints, sealing systems, etc. to last in harsh environments exposed to vibration, ice, salt spray, dirt, debris, etc.
  • Experienced in design, modeling, specification, and component selection for thermal systems; experience with automotive HVAC and refrigeration systems is a plus
  • Experience in FEA (finite element analysis) for structural analysis
  • Experience in designing
  • Understanding of vibration (including modal, random, static and sinusoidal) and vibration reduction strategies highly advantageous
  • Ability to read, understand and generate engineering drawings and specifications, including a strong knowledge of GD&T
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with customers (internal and external), to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments
  • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions
  • Position will involve travel (10% of time) to visit hardware and manufacturing suppliers to support launch programs
  • Ability to work well in a high-paced environment, set and meet appropriate deadlines
  • Willingness and ability to work more than 8 hours a day to ensure that deadlines are achieved weekly hours may regularly be between 50-60 during busy time periods

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 6-10 Years’ Experience in similar engineering roles

 

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in design of electrified powertrain systems
  • Expert CAD system user (Inventor / Creo preferred)

 

Physical Demands: 

  • Ability to stand, sit, use of hands to handle, feel, or reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision

 

Work Environment:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • For the most part, ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional equipment as found in a typical office
