The Opportunity:
As the team responsible for all data movement into, out of, and around athenaNet, the Integration Services development team is executing on athenahealth’s vision of building the healthcare backbone of the United States. We will make healthcare work like it should by removing frustration, redundancies, and safety issues caused by today’s increasingly complex clinical workflows so doctors and patients can focus on what matters.
Our mission is to improve patient care by enabling communication with myriad internal and external systems, including medical monitoring devices, various independent API consumers, and other Electronic Health Record (EHR) software suites.
Athena’s Integration Services (IS) division owns the strategically important data communication formats used by our world class healthcare information backbone. IS teams utilize governmental and industry standards to communicate a patient’s critical data across the whole continuum of care.

Position Summary:

As a Senior Member of Technical Staff, you will arrive with significant engineering experience. You will work alongside your technical team and product owners to deliver solid and secure code that solves business problems and enables business processes. You will be surrounded by capable technical leaders who will enable your personal and professional growth as you contribute to the growth of others.
The right candidate should have a track record of writing solid code, can illustrate a strong career growth potential, and show a real interest in shaping the development of others.
In this role, you will be part of a 3-5 developer scrum team in an environment that encourages open communication and collaboration. Team is based in Austin but is likely to involve remote collaboration with teams in other locales.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
70% [Primary Function] Technical Execution

  • Produce accurate, unambiguous technical design specifications to the appropriate detail
  • Deliver customer value in the form of high quality software components and services in adherence with RPR policies on Security, performance, longevity and Integration testing
  • Estimate the size of development tasks in story points with the goal of 80% accuracy; begin to challenge others during estimation
  • Understand and follow coding conventions, architectures, and best practices
  • Write, debug, and deploy code to production; deliver timely fixes
  • Adhere to DOD (story definition of done) as part of the sprint, including unit tests, functional testing, code reviews, no regressions, bug fixes, documentation and adhere to best coding practices
  • Perform peer code reviews in order to ensure quality standards


15% Contributions to the Team

  • Master the domain knowledge for area of assignment
  • Take ownership of what the team builds after the release; consider customer adoption as success criteria
  • Contribute to agile ceremonies to improve team performance
  • Volunteer for work in the backlog and commit to quality delivery; coordinate efforts across the team to ensure completion and effectiveness
  • Participate and contribute to scrum meetings i.e. daily stand-up, sprint planning, readouts and retrospectives
  • Drive self-organization; help determine how the team functions in collaboration with your peers


10% Mentorship of Others

  • Advise and train members of the team to maximize overall productivity and effectiveness of the team


5% Cross functional Coordination and Communication

  • Work collaboratively across the Technology and Product organizations to ensure alignment towards business goals
  • Build relationships with cross-functional team members
  • Share business and technical learnings with the broader engineering and product organization, while adapting approach for different audiences


Education, Experience, & Skills Required:

  • 4-6 years of experience in an engineering role
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Strong software engineering skills and computer science experience
  • Knowledge of at least one modern programming languages such as: C#, C++, Perl, Java, Python, and javascript/jQuery
  • Familiarity with Unix/Linux, Big Data, SQL, NOSQL, and various other technologies
  • Exposure to object oriented programing, relational database technologies, distributed computing tech (Hadoop, spark), RESTful API, WebUI (HTML 5) and Modern JS frameworks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity working in an Agile environment
  • Perl and/or Kotlin experience
  • Knowledge of CCDA (Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture) and/or FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources)
  • Any experience with CI/CD and microservices
  • Experience developing and/or integrating with a new API

  • Ability to learn and adapt in a fast paced environment, while producing quality code
  • Ability to write code that is technically sound, performant, scalable, and readable
  • Finds creative way to execute even when there is no historical context or known path forward
