Hyliion is looking for a Should Cost Engineer to join our engineering team in Austin. This full-time position offers the opportunity to be a part of a fast-growing company that is revolutionizing the trucking industry. We are seeking exceptionally talented individuals that are highly motivated to revolutionize an industry, reduce the use of fuel and have some fun.  You will be joining an experienced engineering team in the design, simulation, implementation, and testing of electrical powertrain systems. Reports to Engineering Business Manager.

  • Costing Engineer / Manufacturing Engineer who can speak the language of Should Costing / Cost Engineering to customer and supplier.
  • Engage with supplier, customer, and various internal stakeholders to set directions for the costing activity with details of actions and a vision of results envisaged.
  • Responsible for developing cost estimates per product drawing and/or Bill of Material (BOM) related to products currently in development for production, in prototype stage, or in preliminary spec definition stage.
  •  Selection of parts for Should cost to achieve desire spend coverage.
  •  Collaborate with Supplier to optimize the Part cost & Tool cost, by performing quote analysis and generating gap between Should cost value vs. Supplier quote. 
  • Be an active partner with the Engineering team – aid in arriving at a fair yet competitive component and system cost for Hyliion.
  • Work closely with Design & Release Engineers of HV Battery Sys, Driveline Sys, In-Cab/Interior Sys, E/E & Controls Sys etc. Take help from Simulations, Integration & Validation teams - as needed.
  • Takes part of the Engineering Changer Order (ECR) process and validates and signs off on cost impact.
  • Create and present reports, with documentation of technical analysis, system trade-offs as well as business case for technologies.
  • Occasional domestic travel to supplier facilities for enhanced costing collaboration and support of the specific engineering / purchasing team.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent knowledge of Electric Motors, Generators, eAxles/Axles, Gearboxes, Inverters, DC-DC Converters, Junction Boxes, Heaters, Controllers, BMS, Charging sys, LV & HV Harness, Thermal Sys, Pumps, Reservoirs, A/C sys, Engines, Transmissions etc.
  • Ability to understand operations/manufacturing/service documentation.
  • Strong follow-through and self-starting nature
  • Ability to communicate with customers positively and effectively (internal and external), to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments
  • Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions
  • Position will involve travel (up to 10% of time) visiting test locations etc
  • Ability to work well in a high-paced environment, set and meet appropriate deadlines.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • 4+ years of cost estimation experience in a cross-functional team environment
  • Must be able to correctly interpret engineering and tool designs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Automotive or Industrial Engineering
  • Program management experience.
  • Experience in heavy duty automotive industry.
  • Strong machining and fabrication background, preferably in an automotive manufacturing environment.

  • Ability to lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and making fine discriminations in sound.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

Work Environment:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • For the most part, ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional equipment as found in a typical office
