Software Development  Engineer II

Do you want to work on highly distributed systems and work with streaming data solutions? Do you like to challenge yourself and push to find unique ways of solving complex problems? Do you want to leverage state of the art technologies while building best-in-class software and leading the company into uncharted territory? Then you should join Expedia Group’s Property Status team.

The Property Status team goal is to compute whether a property should be live or not… and if not, clearly explain why not. This involves analyzing data from all over the company, enforcing minimum rules for properties, setting properties live (or not), and providing scalable API’s for retrieving information. The software you develop will control the live status for all of Expedia’s inventory. It will touch every property that onboards and consider every process or signal that needs to affect live status. Joining this team will place you in one of the most critical areas affecting the future growth of the company.

What you'll do:

  • Challenges you can work on:

    • Develop fast, scalable, highly available, and reliable property status software that will control the live status for all of Expedia’s properties.

    • Scale our services to handle thousands of requests per second.

    • Use real-time data to understand performance and ensure system scalability.

    • Develop property status funnel features that will drive our business through real-time feedback loops.

    • Scale our public API’s to allow other partners to leverage new Expedia Group services.

    • Scale our private API’s to allow enhanced Expedia UI experiences.

    • Simplify our core property status workflow to enhance both our travelers’ & suppliers’ experience

  • Technologies we use:

    • Java, Kotlin, AWS, Docker, Dropwizard, Kafka, Akka Streams, GraphQL, gRPC, Node.js, S3, Hadoop, Aurora, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Splunk, DataDog, Swagger, Mesos, Samza

  • Responsibilities:

    • Building backend applications from concept to completion

    • Strong commitment to rewriting, refactoring and improving code

    • Delivering tested and optimized high performance code for a distributed SOA environment

    • Developing quality scalable, tested and reliable applications using industry best practices

    • Resolving problems and roadblocks as they occur with help from peers or managers - following through on details and driving issues to closure.

    • Defining, developing and maintaining artifacts like technical design or stakeholder documentation

    • Actively participating in user story creation, coding and design reviews

    • Supporting and troubleshooting data and/or system issues as needed

Who you are:

  • 1-3+ years of experience in Software Engineering (Java experience strongly preferred)

  • Bachelors or master’s degree, preferably in Computer Science or a related major, and/or equivalent work experience

  • Experience using code versioning tools (Git or others)

  • Demonstrated commitment to technical excellence - results oriented and self-managed

  • Strong software development skills, including configuration management, issue tracking, estimation, Agile/Scrum methodology

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent critical thinking skills

  • Technical proficiency in Java, JSON/XML, web services and object-oriented design

  • Experience working with AWS/Cloud infrastructure

  • Experience with large distributed applications is a plus, as is building/operating highly available systems

  • Exposure to various architectural patterns
