Hyliion is looking for a Vehicle Weight Engineer to join our engineering team in Austin. This full-time position offers the opportunity to be a part of a fast-growing company that is revolutionizing the trucking industry. We are seeking exceptionally talented individuals that are highly motivated to revolutionize an industry, reduce the use of fuel and have some fun.  You will be joining an experienced engineering team in the design, simulation, implementation, and testing of electrical powertrain systems. Reports to Engineering Business Manager.

  • Lead and coordinate weight reduction activities across the organization for various vehicles in which Hyliion system will be integrated.
  • Perform benchmarking efforts to understand competitive strategies for weight reduction, recommending approaches to system and component owners.
  • Work with cross functional teams in setting system and vehicle mass targets.
  • Perform analysis of mass to meet system and vehicle requirements.
  • Demonstrate ability to handle multiple competing requirements from various engineering groups as well as cost
  • Travel to vehicle assembly plants and supplier locations to conduct part and vehicle weight verification audits
  • Collaborate with engineers and mass reduction efforts, using CAD and CAE optimization.
  • Lead best practices for use of lightweight materials.
  • Support BOM and Change Control release processes, including signing off of weight changes.
  • Specify the weight conditions under which regulatory tests will be conducted.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • CAD experience (CREO Preferred)
  • Understanding of the weight requirements in various regulatory tests
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent knowledge of Electric Motors, Generators, eAxles/Axles, Gearboxes, Inverters, DC-DC Converters, Junction Boxes, Heaters, Controllers, BMS, Charging sys, LV & HV Harness, Thermal Sys, Pumps, Reservoirs, A/C sys, Engines, Transmissions etc.
  • Ability to understand operations/manufacturing/service documentation.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • BS or MS Degree in Mechanical Engineering/Chemical Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience
  • Know-how of different materials/metals used in manufacturing of automotive components
  • Conversant with current and forthcoming vehicle architectures and system technologies and the tradeoffs between cost and weight.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Program Management experience
  • Experience in heavy duty automotive industry.

 

Physical Demands: 

  • Ability to lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and making fine discriminations in sound.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

 

Work Environment:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • For the most part, ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional equipment as found in a typical office
