The Construction Controller will lead a variety of accounting-related tasks including: coordination and oversight of accounting functions at Amherst Homes and subsidiaries, month-end close and financial reporting, corporate and company-level journal entries for Amherst Homes and subsidiaries, job costing, fixed assets, accruals, account analysis, updating accounting procedures and internal controls, and special projects. The Construction Controller supports the VP of Accounting directly in managing all aspects of designated general accounting functions for reporting and compliance. The Construction Controller provides input and guidance to Amherst Homes and subsidiaries.

  • Manage monthly closing process including review of accounts, reconciliations and monthly closing journal entries prepared by the Accounting team.
  • Manage monthly job cost and general ledger closeout procedures to include, but not limited to, general ledger account reconciliation with subsidiary ledgers, indirect cost allocation, holding cost allocation, work in process review and close jobs.
  • Manage job cost month-end accrual process.
  • Work with Purchasing to determine accruals and cost to complete on closed jobs.
  • Monitor bond and warranty reserves, and allocation of costs.
  • Review and assist with preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reporting packages.
  • Review and assist with the preparation of monthly WIP schedule to monitor project progress, and financing.
  • Assist in the preparation, maintenance and analysis of periodic budgets and forecasts.
  • Prepare distributions to investors, coordinate lot acquisitions and funding draws.
  • Manage the Accounting Construction team.
  • Drive continued process improvement, including working cross functionally, to create repeatable, consistent best practices that enable scale
  • Assist in the preparation of federal, state, and local tax compliance, annual income tax returns, and government agency reporting.
  • Monitor and maintain internal control environment, including maintaining a documented systems of accounting policies and operations.
  • Ensure Accounting Sr. Management is informed and aware of important changes, happenings, and any other pertinent information
  • Perform other duties and ad hoc requests as needed
  • Decision making and independent judgment will be required on a day-to-day basis

What you’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or relevant field required
  • Previous public accounting experience preferred
  • CPA required
  • 5 + years of experience in accounting specifically in job costing homebuilding and/or land development environments, and at least 3 years in a manager role
  • Excel skills (can maintain complex spreadsheets)
  • ERP systems experience preferably Yardi
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with limited direction
  • A process-driven approach, with natural curiosity
  • Efficiency and improvement focused mindset
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to work evening/night/weekends from time to time
