As a Principal Economist at Vrbo you will work directly with the team responsible for the management and optimization of our online two-sided marketplace. You should expect to bring relevant economic theory to bear on hard business problems that lack answers outside of economics. The ideal candidate will be an expert on the economics of technology, display excellent communication skills and be motivated to positively influence the future of one of the world’s most complex two-sided marketplaces.

What You'll Do:

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as company-wide expert on market design, auction theory, two-sided marketplaces, matching theory, game theory and the economics of technology businesses

  • Create economic models of vacation rental and traditional lodging markets

  • Work as part of data science team to design and implement machine learning models for economic problems

  • Consult with product teams on areas of opportunity and economic impact of ongoing product efforts

  • Define the future of a complex two-sided marketplace with heterogeneous participants, inventory and non-trivial incentive structure

  • Perform data analyses in support of models using tools like Python and R

  • Work directly with senior leaders from product and engineering as a representative of economics and data science

Who You Are:

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Economics

  • 8+ years experience in industry, academia or consulting

  • Must communicate clearly and persuasively both verbally and in writing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4+ years working as Senior Economist within a large technology company

  • Publication record in auction theory and market design

  • Strong quantitative intuition and ability to work with data married with strategic thinking and business sense

  • Ability to communicate complex Economic theory to outsiders with clarity and brevity

  • Familiarity with sponsored search, computational advertising, performance attribution, multi-objective optimization in marketplaces and experimental design
