The Amherst Residential (“AR”) Senior Tax Planner oversees all federal, state and local tax planning to determine the impact changes in property taxes will have on our all partners. You will lead the review of all property tax exposure from partnership level, determining the correct approach to appeal tax assessments and determining the most way to administer tax monitoring and payment.. You will work together with Financial Accounting and Planning functions to incorporate strategic changes and the impact those will have on our budgets, forecasts, cash planning and tax payments to support the company’s growth. The Senior Tax Planner must maintain a steady approach and hold him/herself accountable for results.

Responsibilities:

You will be an individual contributor that may develop into leading a team. You will work closely with the existing finance, accounting, portfolio management and asset management teams and all external service providers. You will be responsible for:

  • The evaluation of all tax rules at the state and federal level that impact our core property tax administration and expense
  • Prepare and submit tax position papers to state and county tax assessors to improve the property tax liability for our investors and owners
  • Determine the approach to prepare state property tax filings through in-house or external expertise to bring improved returns to our partners and funds
  • Have knowledge in assessment review, appeal determination, tax bill administration, and the three valuation approaches: cost, sales comparison and income. Additionally, has knowledge of assessment equalization methodology that may apply in certain states.
  • Help prepare the Company’s quarterly Board and Board Committee reviews
  • Identify ways to reduce our reliance on third-party administrators
  • Other responsibilities

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience working in similar state and local tax role is required
  • Bachelors in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA designation a plus
  • Experience with state and local property tax rules and the ability to apply account and forecast changes in those tax rule
  • Demonstrate clear proficiency in state and local tax regulations and research
  • Real estate industry experience required
  • Robust interpersonal skills, work with little supervision and attention to detail
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize assignments, deal with interruptions, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and growth-oriented environment
  • Highly proficient in MS office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
