Reporting to the SVP – Finance and Financial Reporting, the VP - Accounting is responsible for managing the company’s corporate accounting and financial reporting processes. This individual will work with a team of accountants to ensure that the financial statements for multiple entities are properly consolidated and reported timely and accurately. Daily responsibilities will include critical thinking, decision making and technical accounting research for complex accounting issues.
Job Functions
- Draft, review and publish periodic (e.g., monthly, quarterly, annual) required and supplemental financial reports and other business results
- Gather and analyze monthly operating results, providing interpretation and analysis to business stakeholders
- Analyze and evaluate capital partner impacts and requirements when new strategies and tactics are under evaluation
- Support business decision-making in a variety of situations and craft relevant memos for fund investors, the relevant board of directors and executive leadership
- Build and maintain strong relationships with business leaders
- Maintain current accounting knowledge; research and provide GAAP interpretation and draft technical accounting memorandums for complex transactions
- Coordinate with external auditors to complete the annual financial statement audits of various entities
- Coordinate with tax preparers to ensure compliance with required tax basis tracking, reporting and estimates for governmental filings and other external requirements
- Maintain internal control that ensures compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting
- Develops and manages the system of internal control by anticipating and planning for accounting policy changes
- Identify opportunities for financial reporting improvement and recommend alternatives where appropriate
- Provide leadership, management, and training of staff and subordinates
- Prioritize the function’s projects and manage customer deliverables and timelines while maintaining integrity, quality, and accuracy
- Consistently assess the corporate accounting group’s staffing levels and overall department structure including recruiting, hiring, developing, and evaluating the staff and subordinates
- Provide ad hoc analysis, reporting and special projects as needed
Required Skills and Experience:
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- 10+ years of combined real estate industry (single-family residence space preferable) and public accounting experience, including 7+ years in public accounting (Big 4 preferable); background including an institutional reporting environment preferable
- Minimum 5 - 7 years in management role
- GAAP financial statement preparation experienced required
- Proficient in GAAP, and knowledgeable in fair value reporting, investment and real estate accounting rules
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to meet stringent deadlines
- Detail oriented executioner that is highly process and documentation driven
- Proven track record for driving process efficiencies
- Self-starter that possesses the ability to work well with ambiguity and/or minimal direction
- Successful track record in leading teams
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and manage effectively
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses
- High level of integrity and dependability
- Experience dealing with complex fund structures
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or other related discipline
- CPA is required
- Highly proficient in MS office applications: Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
- Knowledge of MS Office and Yardi Voyager preferred
- Tech savvy with knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems preferred
