What is the Invitern Program?

The Invitern Program offers opportunities for students, recent grads, or those who are early in their career to develop industry skills through Invitae’s internship roles.

With each opportunity, we aim to create an experience for our interns (Inviterns!) that is enhanced by mentorship, networking opportunities, and impactful work. Throughout the duration of this program, we hope to offer a sense of community with our Inviterns and build lasting relationships. Our hope is that Inviterns become future Invitaens!

The 2022 Summer Invitern Program is a paid internship and will start June 6th, 2022 and commence August 12, 2022.

Invitae is dedicated to bringing comprehensive genetic information into mainstream medicine to improve healthcare for billions of people. We are leading the transformation of the genetics industry, by making clinical-grade genetic information affordable and accessible to guide health decisions across all stages of life. 

The Data Engineering team is building out a data platform in order to allow all teams to interact with data in a scalable, secure and consistent manner utilizing Apache Kafka, Snowflake and Kubernetes. Our data aggregation and transformation of many data types including variant calls, finance information, patient data, among many others. 

Duration: June - August/September (schedule is flexible) 

What you will do: 

  • Collaborate with the data engineering team and stakeholders on the research team to build a research data platform that can support large scale research projects for multi-omics studies ● Contribute to building Invitae’s Patient Data Platform, which aggregates patient data from multiple different sources including genomic assays, family history, electronic medical records and self reported surveys in an effort to provide patients with better clinical decisions

What you bring: 

  • Are pursuing a Bachelor’s, M.S., or PhD degree in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, biology, biochemistry, or a related field
  • Have completed at least 3 years of an undergraduate program
  • Are self-starters and can work towards a larger goal with minimal guidance ● Have a proficiency writing code in one of the following languages: Scala, Python, Java, Golang or another advanced programming language
  • Have fundamental software development skills, such as experience with version control systems like git, interactive debugging, IDEs, etc.
  • Have familiarity with SQL, relational databases and data warehousing
  • Familiarity with messaging/streaming systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ is an advantage
