What is the Invitern Program?

The Invitern Program offers opportunities for students, recent grads, or those who are early in their career to develop industry skills through Invitae’s internship roles.

With each opportunity, we aim to create an experience for our interns (Inviterns!) that is enhanced by mentorship, networking opportunities, and impactful work. Throughout the duration of this program, we hope to offer a sense of community with our Inviterns and build lasting relationships. Our hope is that Inviterns become future Invitaens!

The 2022 Summer Invitern Program is a paid internship and will start June 6th, 2022 and commence August 12, 2022.

Invitae is looking for a Paid Software Engineering Intern to join our Bioinformatics Technologies Team in the Summer of 2022. This is a full time internship that is ideal for someone who is currently in a BS, MS, or PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent background that plans to get hands-on industry experience. You will work alongside other software engineers, clinical geneticists, and lab scientists to further deliver on our mission to bring genetic information into mainstream medical practice. You will have the opportunity to build and complete a software project along with one of our developers as your technical mentor during the months in the program. 

What you’ll do: 

  • Develop features with a pre-identified project from beginning to delivery Work with mentors to understand the expectations and manage project timeline Communicate with internal users, stakeholders and other development teams Troubleshoot complex issues quickly and effectively 

What you bring: 

  • Proficiency with one or more languages and frameworks supported by Invitae (Python, javascript, Django, Flask, React)
  • Basic understanding to operate in a UNIX environment with shell scripts Experience in SQL and/or noSQL datastores and the ability to write simple queries Team player and can do attitude 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Curiosity about how things work and strong problem solving skills Preferred: Experience in biology, bioinformatics, or healthcare related industry Preferred: Experience with data visualization (eg. matplotlib, plotly, D3)
