Research Engineer Internship - Internet Measurement at Cloudflare
At Cloudflare, we have our eyes set on an ambitious goal: to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers trillions of requests per month. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare have all web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer and named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list.
We realize people do not fit into neat boxes. We are looking for curious and empathetic individuals who are committed to developing themselves and learning new skills, and we are ready to help you do that. We cannot complete our mission without building a diverse and inclusive team. We hire the best people based on an evaluation of their potential and support them throughout their time at Cloudflare. Come join us!
About Cloudflare Research
Cloudflare’s Research Team is involved with building the future of Cloudflare by tackling strategic projects that have a large impact on Cloudflare systems and the Internet at large. Research interns will work alongside experienced researchers and fellows to investigate new ideas and build novel technologies. Interns will have the opportunity to advance their own research careers while making meaningful contributions to Cloudflare. Cloudflare Research interns have opportunities to dive into and make changes to existing codebases, work independently on greenfield projects, and collaborate closely with the Engineering organization to achieve common goals.
More information about Cloudflare's approach to research can be found here.
Research Internships and Responsibilities
Cloudflare's Research Team is focused on solving difficult problems in security, performance, and privacy at scale using cryptographic tools. We are launching new investigations in network architectures and protocols, distributed systems, and measurement. This involves systems engineering, open source software development, protocol design, implementation of primitives, with lots of performance evaluation alongside. We make cutting edge research contributions in-house, as well as in collaboration with academia, Internet standards organizations like the IETF, and more!
Research internships are also available all year around! Successful candidates will be matched to suitable measurement projects to understand performance, evaluate correctness, or elucidate wider Internet-related characteristics. We also welcome novel measurement proposals and ideas that can help to inform or build a better Internet (in the form of a max 200 word proposal).
General Intern Requirements
- Enrolled in a PhD or equivalent graduate research program in Computer Science or related STEM field (exceptional MSc or BSc may be considered with commensurate experience and evidence of contributions)
- Must have a proven record of peer-reviewed research, standards, or equivalent publication in a reputable venue in your field
- Have or able to obtain authorization to work in the country where the position will be located (currently USA, UK, EU)
Advanced knowledge or experience with at least one of the following:
- Computer networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, BGP, QUIC, etc.)
- Authentication protocols, applied cryptography, PKI and SSL/TLS
- Operating or distributed systems development
- Measurement for network and computer systems
- Proven track record of independently driving projects in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication skills on both technical and non-technical issues
- Experience with high throughput/low latency real-time systems and/or content delivery networks
What Makes Cloudflare Special?
We’re not just a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company. We’re a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company with a soul. Fundamental to our mission to help build a better Internet is protecting the free and open Internet.
Project Galileo: We equip politically and artistically important organizations and journalists with powerful tools to defend themselves against attacks that would otherwise censor their work, technology already used by Cloudflare’s enterprise customers--at no cost.
Athenian Project: We created Athenian Project to ensure that state and local governments have the highest level of protection and reliability for free, so that their constituents have access to election information and voter registration.
Path Forward Partnership: Since 2016, we have partnered with Path Forward, a nonprofit organization, to create 16-week positions for mid-career professionals who want to get back to the workplace after taking time off to care for a child, parent, or loved one.
Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? We’d love to hear from you!
