Role Description

At Dropbox the SRE (Site Reliability Engineer) role is a hybrid systems and software engineering role. SREs are Software Engineers (SWE’s) focused specifically on the availability, durability, observability, latency, performance, and scalability/capacity of Dropbox, as well as the overall toil required to operate our services.

SRE is not just about monitoring and protecting Dropbox services 24/7.  It’s about improving those processes with system design, automation, tooling, and software development so that systems require less human intervention. SREs utilize this combination of software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, distributed, fault-tolerant systems.

SRE are responsible for and take the lead on reliability, automation, and other issues related to KTLO (Keeping The Lights On) in an organization. SREs are integrated with critical infrastructure and product teams and take part in developing software, maintaining it, and scaling it, whether for our user-facing products or the underlying hardware infrastructure that allows us to deliver them.

Example SRE projects:

  • Build an auto-remediation system to automatically resolve production incidents before escalating them to on-call engineers
  • Design the system and processes that Dropbox engineers use to deploy their software into production
  • Drive the company through “Disaster Recovery Tests”, where we automatically introduce breakages to our infrastructure to test Dropbox’s overall resiliency

Responsibilities

As an SRE intern, you work side-by-side with Dropbox Engineers to tackle some of our most critical challenges. Here are some examples of SRE teams that you can have an impact on:

  • Production Access and Controls - The PAC team works to ensure that the Dropbox production environment is safe and reliable.
  • Disaster Readiness - To ensure Dropbox can handle a large-scale disaster at one of our datacenters, we perform regular failover exercises using tooling we’ve written, and help other teams multihome their services (make them redundant across multiple locations).
  • Reliability Frameworks - We build central tools that are used Dropbox-wide to enable reliability best practices, ensuring a smooth experience for engineers who are oncall or responding to an incident.
Requirements
  • Computer Science (or related field) students who are currently pursuing Bachelors, Masters or PhD programs graduating between December 2023 - August 2025
  • Experience writing or shipping software as part of coursework, personal projects, internships, coding competitions or research
  • Passion for learning, solving problems, and challenging the status quo
  • Available for Summer 2023 full time internship (40 hours per week / 12 weeks)

Total Rewards

For candidates hired in Colorado, the expected salary/On-Target Earnings (OTE) rate for the role is $8,000/mo, subject to change.

Salary/OTE is just one component of Dropbox’s total rewards package. Dropbox is committed to investing in the holistic health and wellbeing of all Dropboxers and their families.  Our benefits and perks programs include:

  • Competitive medical, dental and vision coverage
  • Flexible Time Off/Paid Time Off, paid holidays, Company-wide PTO days, Volunteer time off

Additional Perks + Benefits

In order to be successful in our Virtual First environment we needed to make changes that would allow employees to have more control over both where and how they work. Therefore, we embrace “non-linear workdays” with defined core collaboration hours that overlap across time zones. Beyond that, we encourage employees to design their own schedules to balance collaboration with needs for individual focus. We’ve also moved from “all day syncs” to an “async by default” culture, reserving meetings for discussion, debate, and decision-making, and handling all other work in our deep focus hours.
