Software Engineer Intern

| Austin

What we’re looking for:

Modernize is looking for full time summer 2019 Software Engineering Interns. During the summer you’ll be trained and put on “real world” software development teams working on our core products. Our downtown office space has an open floor plan that encourages collaboration and pushing each other to be our best.

Your first two weeks will involve training, building software and pushing code to production. The next 10 weeks you’ll join an agile team and work through solutions with other developers, testers, designers and product managers. In this position, you will research, design, build, test, deploy, and maintain web and backend applications that leverage large-scale marketing data to optimize web-based user experiences. Your classroom knowledge of databases, programming languages, and scalable web architectures will be put to the test as you build out applications that optimize the experience of millions of online users. Working in a tight-knit team environment, you will participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, sprint planning, and deployments. While working at Modernize you will gain hands on experience with a primarily LEMP based stack in a distributed AWS environment.

What you’ll do:

  • Translate business requirements into software
  • Develop and deploy application software
  • Interact with large datasets within our applications
  • Collaborate with peers on technical design, work estimation and feature implementation on data models, business logic, and user interfaces
  • Participate in sprint planning by understanding the effort, risk, and priority of remaining work committed to a software release
  • Perform peer code reviews and collaborate with team to better understand software development practices
  • Create, execute, and maintain manual, unit and feature tests
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to prioritize and resolve issues

What you need:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or another technical discipline with significant computer coursework
  • Exposure to high level programming languages such as Java, PHP, Python, or Ruby
  • A desire to learn new technologies
  • An understanding of software design and architecture principles
  • The ability to work in a group development setting
  • Time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and translate complex information to internal teams

Nice to haves:

  • Experience working with database technologies (MySQL/Postgres)
  • Experience working with Vagrant or Docker
  • Experience with PHP/Laravel
  • Written and designed REST API’s
