Do you have experience helping startup companies build their IT infrastructure?   Do you enjoy solving complicated problems while balancing the need for quick decisions?  We are looking for a Linux-focused IT Professional to provide external consulting services and assist us in building out our infrastructure as we expand.  Paradromics is developing high-volume bidirectional data streaming capabilities between brains and computers. Our neural interface technologies will initially be used to help physically disabled patients reconnect with the outside world – with infinite possibilities beyond.  

Primary Scope of Services

As a contractor for 20 - 40 hours per month, review and implement programs, policies and procedures to ensure the Company’s IT systems are secure and efficient; specifically:

Linux system administration:

• User account management and groups
• SSH server and client configuration, public key management, and port tunneling
• DNS resolver configuration and resource record administration
• Network interface, route, firewall/NAT (iptables)
• VPN server and client configuration
• Commercial-class WiFi network deployment, configuration, administration
• Filesystems and RAID: configuration, tuning, rebuilds and migrations
• Fileservers: NFS, Samba
• Bash scripting

Support for Windows and Mac clients:

• LAN configuration
• Remote filesystem configuration (SMB)
• VPN client configuration
• Application and license installation
• Data backup client installation, configuration, maintenance

Preferred experience includes:

• Ubuntu/Debian, Synology, and UBNT (Ubiquiti/Vyatta) platforms
• Assembling server-class PCs
• Laboratory technical procedures, instrument networking, and automation
• Building Debian/Ubuntu packages, and building packages from source
• Ansible-based platform management for Linux, Windows, and Mac
• Python and/or other environments commonly used for automating Linux and cross-platform system operations
• Automated tape backup operation
• Git/github for version control and issue/project tracking
• Deployment of license servers
• Configuration and operation of Kerberos 5 servers
• Working familiarity with encryption fundamentals
• Postgres database administration
• Apache and phpBB maintenance and administration

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills Required:

• Expertise to perform the services described in the scope of services
• Theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to understand what solutions have worked in the past and about how to improve established systems and processes
• Excellent communication skills, written and oral, as well as interpersonal communications skills for effective negotiating and interfacing with internal and external stakeholders
• Excellent listening skills in order to listen to the needs of the Company and then to implement solutions that address the specific needs.
• Ability to explain ideas and concepts in a simplified manner that is the person must understand complex ideas in IT and able to simplify and explain problems and solutions in terms everyone can understand.
• Project management and problem solving skills
