Hyliion is looking for a Dimensional Engineering Lead to join our engineering team in Austin. This full-time position offers the opportunity to be a part of a fast-growing company that is revolutionizing the trucking industry. We are seeking exceptionally talented individuals that are highly motivated to revolutionize an industry, reduce the use of fuel and have some fun.  You will be joining an experienced engineering team in the design, simulation, implementation and testing of electrical powertrain systems.  In this role, you will be developing all elements of a closed-loop dimensional-management program. Reports to Director Powertrain

Lead a closed-loop dimensional-management program, including:

  • Training and mentoring of all design, procurement, and inspection personnel in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) methods and measurement data reporting methods per ASME Y14 standards
  • Guiding the design, procurement, and inspection team to achieve consistent, clear, and correct dimensional tolerance specifications for critical mechanical characteristics of all Hyliion vehicle components to achieve high quality, production ready components at minimal manufacturing and inspection cost
  • Tolerance stack analyses using manual 1D methods and software-based 3D methods
  • Evaluation and verification of supplier measurement methods and data reporting
  • Provide clear and useable feedback of all tolerance analysis and inspection data information to design, procurement, inspection, and future analysis efforts

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing 
  • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Ability to read, understand and generate mechanical design, manufacturing, and dimensional inspection documentation 
  • Expert in CREO and Autodesk products 
  • Expert in GD&T, inspection methods, and data reporting and tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Full understanding of the class 8 truck environment and how this influences the hardware design and packaging decisions 
  • High volume manufacturing experience, including machining, casting, injection molding, sheetmetal, and 3D printing
  • Understanding of automotive powertrain systems including both traditional and hybrid 
  • Strong follow-through and self-starting nature 
  • Ability to communicate verbally effectively and positively and in writing with customers (internal and external), to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments 
  • Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions 
  • Ability to work well in a high-paced environment, set and meet appropriate deadlines 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, mathematics, or science 
  • 10+ years’ experience in mechanical design, manufacturing, or inspection
  • ASME Certified Senior Level Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Professional (GDTP-S)
  • Experience providing GD&T training and advising
  • Experience providing dimensional tolerance stack-up analysis using manual 1D and software-based 3D (VA(VisVSA)/CETOL/3DCS) methods
  • Experience with APQP methods, including Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA), gage R&R, and other statistical methods required to support Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering
  • Experience in mechanical design and manufacturing and inspection
  • Expert CAD user 
  • Vehicle design and modification and vehicle electrification experience
  • Design, dimensional-management, manufacturing, or inspection management experience

 

Physical Demands: 

  • Ability to lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and making fine discriminations in sound.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

 

Work Environment:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • For the most part, ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional equipment as found in a typical office
