Job Summary:

The Corporate Controller will report to the CFO and will be responsible for all aspects of accounting including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll. Primary focus is process re-engineering that will facilitate company growth. The individual in this role will be a key member of the senior staff and be a driving force behind the initiative to prepare Phunware for the public markets. 

Expertise in US GAAP and accounting operations, as well as extensive experience aggressively holding people accountable to expense thresholds in all areas of the business is a prerequisite.

This position requires an equal mix of business acumen, financial technical skills and relationship management. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, fantastic attitude and be very comfortable managing and coordinating activities across multiple sites, functional areas and time zones.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage general accounting staff ensuring integrity of financial information and compliance with internal control structure, US GAAP and Company policy.
  • Responsible to lead the monthly and quarterly close process for the Company, and ensure close related controls are operating effectively

  • Lead in the annual audit of the Company’s financial statements and assist external auditors
  • Deliver financial reports to management in support of key initiatives and required external reporting requirements

  • Collaborate with accounting team to create internal controls and ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley 404 requirements for systems and operational accounting functions.
  • Ascertain best practices and drive process improvement, efficiencies and cost saving initiatives across all areas under management
  • Understand and drive improvements that will maximize utility of NetSuite ERP system
  • Manage disbursement functions for accounts payable, payroll and expense reporting
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition treatment for all revenue
  • Manage treasury and banking relationships
  • Participate in due diligence efforts for potential M&A targets
  • Lead efforts to successfully close, integrate and accelerate all accounting functions post-acquisition 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance / accounting or a related field
  • CPA (active) desirable
  • A minimum of ten (10) years progressive experience in accounting, reporting and general ledger management in a complex, public company environment
  • A strong understanding of technical accounting and internal controls, as well as knowledge of US generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and financial reporting standards (including basic international accounting standards, SEC requirements etc.).
  • Technical expertise in general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable processes and procedures
  • Demonstrated success in project leadership and process improvement initiatives
  • Preference given to "Big 4" Public Accounting experience
  • Experience with intercompany transactions and reconciling
  • SOX compliance experience
  • Strong managerial skills of professional or degreed accountants as well as clerical staff
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Self-motivated, proactive and able to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Extensive experience in financial modeling and ad hoc analysis
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work across all functional areas
  • Consistent track record for delivering commitments on time and with minimal supervision
  • Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong problem solving skills with a strong work ethic

Desirable:

  • MBA or Master’s Degree
  • Experience in the Software as a Service (SaaS) industry
  • Strong curiosity and passion for technology and digital media
